Bleach is much better than Sodium Hydroxide.

John, thank you for a great video link, please understand my reasoning for wanting to move it to the vendor section of the board.

Chlorine, Soap, Tsp, Water - works great - Be careful

Squirtgun:

Chlorine is distributed in many forms and it is harmful / dangerous in most of them - gas, liquid, powder.

Chlorine is available in dry form at very high concentrations and it is much more potent and dangerous to work with than 6-12% sodium hypochlorite.

Even with proper precautions, don't try experimenting with it unless you have an extra eye or lung you don't need.

If your current mix is working for you - go with that!

We use liquid.

Is the chemical that you use - safer? If so, what type of chemical are you using, I may give it a try. Also, how much does it cost per sqft compared to chlorine?
I've been searching for an alternative that compares in price and quality. The quality will be hard to beat, but maybe if the price is lower - it may be worth a try. Also, if it is safer, thats a big plus. Eyes and lungs are pretty important - although I havn't heard of a big epidemic in the pool industry, pressure washing industry, or people who maintain their own pools at home. When I go swimming and the pool has too much chlorine in it - it sure burns. So therefore, I were goggles and a face shield.

I too, say be careful with any chemical, especially chlorine.

Tim:
The chemicals I use for for a roof are much safer. Our chemicals don't contain chlorine or sodium hydroxide, but it'll cost you about $25k to get access to them. Obviously, they are not going to be cost-effective for part-timers or companies that don't do a lot of roofs.

Back to Henry's question:
If you have to choose between chlorine or sodium hydroxide, chlorine is the clear winner - it is safer for the roof, your personnel, recommended by ARMA, and works much faster than sodium hydroxide. While it is not the greatest thing in the world to spray on a roof, it will eventually evaporate - but sodium hydroxide won't. I have seen the effects of sodium hydroxide weeks and months after application and the accelerated granule loss is obvious.

Henry:
Give us a call and I will send you a gallon of our Roof Restore(tm) cleaner. I would like to hear how it works for you in MD.

Hey John,

I called and left my information on your machine. I would be happy to try it out and let you know how it works in this area. I think Chlorine works the best but I'm always open minded about new products and I don't have any problem with sharing my results.

Henry:

It's going out today.

MSDS and instructions will be in the package, but feel free to call if you have any questions.

Thanks

John

I didn't realize that you sold a product - now that I read your subtitle, I recognize your name. $25K can buy a lot of chlorine - Heck, I think that I could manufacture my own for that amount. haha I've heard and read that your roof-a-cide is good stuff. I don't think that I do enough roofs to foot the bill. You sent me information in the past - I must say, it appears to be a pretty good program and possible money maker.

Using 7lbs of 68% Chlorine in 4gal of water I can mfg. 10 gallons of 12% Chlorine for roof washing at a cost of $25.

Ken if you are mixing powdered pool shock that could explain why you're not getting the results others do using the chemical roof cleaning method.Liquid chlorine 10.5% to 12% is what most who do roofs use. Some use it straight others dilute it down to a 50/50 mix and everywhere in between.

Why would powdered pool shock be any different than liquid. If you take 68% chlorine and dilute it to 12% it is the same as if you bought a bottle of 12% - except it would probably be closer to a true 12% and not weakend over time.

Henery,
I Use Between 20% And 40% Of 10.5% Sodium Hypochlorite(this Puts You Back To Household Bleach Or Less) Some Tsp And A Good Bit Of Soap.I Find That Using More Of A Diluted Product Is Best.i Always Spray The Mix Back Into The Tank To Mix It Up Good.as A Precaution,I Have my guy on the ground wet Plants And Shrubs The Whole Time.this Has Worked For Me ,(11years) , TIM

Hello Ken,
I have had a couple of friends in the Houston area tell me that they have found Chlrine for less than $2.00 per gallon in the Houston area. I can get it here in Corpus Christi also for less than $2.00 per gallon. This way there is no mixing or possible hazardous reaction. Less work and more time to play. Just F.Y.I.
Hope this helps.

I found a source for 12.5% at $1.18 per gallon. Of course my buying 110 gallons might have lowered his price a bit as opposed to asking for a 5 gallon pail.
