selling of info

I have been getting e-mail and phone calls from a company that claims to have gained my information from PWNA. Does or has the PWNA sold or allowed access to the membership database? How can I opt out from my information being distributed to vendors? Is anyone else being contacted by companies that claim to have gotten the info from PWNA?

Hey Grant,

I wanted to answer you here also so everyone didn't think your question was ignored.
The PWNA does not sell it's members list. They may have gotten your information from a BBS post or from the PWNA Member directory.

Although I have received a postal solicitation that referenced PWNA, I will echo Henry - I think it is just very easy to obtain names, addresses, etc... from the boards or the actual PWNA website. It is there for folks to be able to find a contractor. Anytime you are published somehow, you'll get the double-edged sword effect. The client that wants to find you will and the pest that wants your business will too.

If they are calling you, get on the Do Not Call Registry - they can't call you...period. When they do it anyway, be real nice until you get the company name and phone number then nail them with the FCC fine :)

And you wonder why some people object ot putting all that info in your signature?

p.s. The do not call registry only applies to individuals, businesses are not covered in that. That is why you are seeing an increase and more agressive tacticts in the solicitation to business phone numbers.

A very objective response to this whole solicitation issue was pointed out on another bbs - We, as businesses, solicit individuals and businesses every day for work. If a company is calling, what would it hurt to afford the caller a couple of minutes of your time, if only as a courtesy to someone else just trying to do their job? I know it would hurt our business badly if we had to just wait for the phone to ring because of one ad we have out.

I know I'm guilty of cutting off phone solicitors or even just hanging up - somehow I'm sure that these poor people did not really choose this as a career either. Then again, I an straying from the point of the thread as well, huh?

Celeste

I will give mopst solicitors a few moments of my time unless it is a computer generated call with the long pause before somebody actually is alerted to the fact that the phone is picked up. I will not be polite though when I have said " no thank you" and they continue to to sell me again and again. The problem is that once a company gets ahold of your info they resell it over and over to other telemarketers.

You know what, I'm going to start taking a different tactic with Telemarketers.. For the next week I won't hang up on them or put them on hold for 10 minutes...
From now on, I'm going to offer them a real job, just come in and fill out the application!

All assoc. members get a copy of the data. they might sell the info or trade it.

Bullfeathers, Ron! We were associate members, and NEVER got a copy of the list, I was on the BOD, and never saw a copy of the entire list. HQ guards it very, very well. We knew who was expiring in membership, and who had renewed on a monthly basis, only becuase the committee worked on contacting folks.

Ilove getting sales calls .. It is a way for me to realease my anger.. I love when people call and try to sell me stuff. I had this one guy call and tell me he had a hood cleaning chemical that would eat chinese grease. I said I use Caustic and he said caustic was illegal.. HAHAHAHA Thus i Statred to release my anger .. When I got thru with him I believe he was crying... And I felt so much better.. Yes you may call me an asshole but you have to remember I am a Salesman too.. People really love to get on my bad side.. I will listen to anyone that calls to sell me anything.. But when they lie or try to cheat me It's all over..

Feel free to soliciate me anyway you can...

I still have mine, I think you guys should check with the home office. I hate to fight or argue about this. I really don't like being called a liar.

Its was sent to me on excel format on disc.

Sorry, just telling the truth..................

If you claim this is not your policy then you need to tell someone.

Ron,
How old is the list? How many years ago did you get it?
Beth

So, your saying they use to give the info and now they don't. Its and old list.

The info is on the pwna site for anyone to see. anyone can take it. delco even has a larger list.

Your not going to stop anyone from selling this info if they put it together.

No I didn't say that. I asked a question. Back in 1999 when we first joined and went to the fall convention, we got a list of attendees (paper). That is the only kind of list we have ever gotten, since 1999 as members.

Beth

I was not trying to create controversy but was curious if others are getting sales call from a company stating they were refered by PWNA

Grant,
The answer is no. Whoever gave you that call thru that remark about being referred to by the PWNA was a sales ploy. Your getting the truth from the people on the inside such as Everett, Henry,Beth and myself. There's no controversy being caused because we are telling you what we know. So once again the answer is no it was not authorized.

If people are going to say half of the story then half gets left for interpretation. Ron, the reason it is significant if it was older is that it could have been from the old management company and how they treated the list for Associate Members, I honestly do not know(nor care) what the old policy may have been. You are listed in the database as an Associate Member and I will find out if we treat those differently under JMP Productions(management company). I know that I have NEVER recieved a CD from them. As far as contractor members are concerned I am not aware of anyone recieving a CD. We all used to get a list on an Excel spreadsheet of all the members in a directory. That was when Andrew Avery was the Executive Director. I do not see where anyone has called you a liar, as matter of a fact, I think everyone who has responded here considers you their friend.

If someone wants something bad enough they can easily find it and there seems to be 100% agreement there. I can say with 100% certainty that the PWNA does not sell or solicit the list.
