Today I was working and my unloader may have been over worked craftsman 3400 psi 4gpm. The plastic cap on top of the unloader valve( not the knob, but the cap) shot off a foot or so. The p.w still rund fine and I snapped that cap back on.Did something bad happen?

If it still runs fine, there's probably nothing wrong. I don't know why the knob would fly off.

Sometimes a device will be added to a pressure washer that is Temperature Sensitive. It will pop when the Temperature of the Bypass water gets above 140 Deg F.
When the water cools down and the machine is shut off it will reset it's self.
I see this as a safety device working as it should to prevent dammage to your pump.
I think it just popped hard and knocked the plastic cover off. No dammage done.
