Phelps Wand and Phelps Equipment

Chris I have also been at this awhile, and I still enjoy the look on the h/o face. I had a good time shooting the chit also, we will talk again soon. Guns have always been my first choice.

Lol...My responses are in bold....

e
"Me, and my guys are used to dragging 5/8 hose around too, and do not need any additional weight or bulk.
Personally, I do even NOT use a wand at all, I use a gun.
I only posted this info for those of you that feel you NEED a wand."

You sound like the guys who whine about using a heavy duty ball valve when using their surface cleaners...Gimme a break.....

Then again, I use 3/8" hose, so maybe that's why I'm not overwhelmed by holding a pvc wand and "wrestling" with those crude, bulky, heavy 1/2" pvc ball valves!

"These wands are sold locally in many places, so the question to you Mike is what is YOUR time worth."

Well, since I am wasting more time responding to this garbage that it would take me to assemble a pvc wand, I really don't think that's an issue. I think I can find the time.

"On page one of this thread, you broke one"

Yes, I did. Stupid mistake, tossed it into the grass, but one end of it hit the concrete sidewalk and broke the elbow. As I said, if you take care of your tools, they usually don't break. Learned my lesson on that one.

"IF you are only opening and closing your ball valve 2 or 3 times on a roof, SOMETHING is wrong, or you could care less about overspray and runoff?
Often, on a windy day, one must actually spray between gusts of wind.
AND, sometimes, when shooting a really steep roof, one needs to let pressure build, and spray intermittently.
Kinda hard to do with an open ball valve.
Another consideration with a trigger vs a ball valve is this.
When a ball valve "opens", there is a moment when it partially opens BEFORE it is wide open.
This causes a momentary pressure drop, and a slight loss of shooting distance.
A "trigger" is instantaneous by comparasion, and there is less momentary pressure drop."

Most of the roofs I do, I walk. I have no need to build up pressure...my pump puts out plenty for what I need. When I do shoot from the ground, I use a cheap pressurewashing gun. Again, your arguement has no bearing on how I and others I'm familliar with clean roofs. As far as windy days, maybe we have less of that here in Gainesville, because it is rarely an issue.

"I have never met Don, or even spoken to him.
I only "know" him from the Internet.
Maybe I am just "old school" Mike, but I HATE seeing educational boards being used to sell anything.
I think most come here for free advice, and I think that advice is "tainted" when it includes a sales pitch."

As I said, I've never seen Don make a sales pitch...he's offered instruction on how to build your own.

"A wand does NOT work better then a gun Mike.
You are going to lose this discussion because you have only opinion, NOT science, on your side.
Roof Cleaning is simply carefully wetting down a roof, and the faster we can accomplish that, the better.
The pattern of a nozzle develops exponentially with distance.
A gun gives a nozzle time to "do it's job".
A wand places a nozzle too close to a roof for it to develop it's full pattern.
That's why yard spray guys do not use "Phelps Wands", LOL
They use guns, because they are faster.

My nozzle is typically 3-4' from the surface of the roof. Are you saying you hold your "gun" over your head to achieve a larger spray pattern?

As for Don, IMHO he WANTS to convince us they are "better" because he SELLS them.
Sure, he could get and sell other guns and wands.
But then, he wouldn't have an "exclusive" product anymore, would he, LOL"

Your opinion is anything but "humble", and it is quite wrong. PVC wands are not exclusive to Don Phelps...I could just as easily begin building them and selling them, as could anyone else. This argument is stupid.

"And WHAT other spray guns have you tried Mike?
Have you tried the one we recommend, or are you just "shilling" for your buddy Don, in the HOPE that by "supporting" him on the Internet, he will give you a near cost deal on the stuff he sells?

Of course I haven't tried the one you recommend...nor do I plan to. My pvc wand works just fine. Why would I spend the money and time to get my hands on something I don't need, just because someone who seems to have an agenda says so. You claim Don has an agenda, that being to sell hundreds of PVC wands....I say it is YOU who have an agenda...Don Phelps has been called by more than a few a "roof guru". If I had to guess, that's just chaps your ass. Well, it really doesn't take any guesswork.

As far as giving me "near cost deals" on the stuff he sells, I wouldn't even ask. I don't buy my supplies from Don. I bought one machine from him, at the same price as I'd have paid with anyone else...but I did save on shipping!

With all due respect Mike, you seem VERY defensive and protective of Don, why ?

Right, let's make this about me. LOL! I (and quite a few others) am just tired of the same old crap you're spewing in your silly attempts to discredit Don.

What he calls the "Phelps Wand" was passed around on the old Delco board YEARS ago.

Us "Old Timers" know better.

It ain't like it is "his wand", LOL

He's said this himself many times...I know a guy here locally who uses one, and he's never been on these boards or met Don Phelps. Don never called it a "phelps wand". He was simply the one who posted the plans on these boards and made the rest of us aware of how to make one.

We used, and abandoned these contraptions long before most of you guys were ever in this business.
For one thing, the gas from the Chlorine attacks the joints in a PVC wand, a solid piece of Polyproplyne in the wand we recommend is just plain better.

I know, I know...you're a "roof cleaning only" company who has been in business for 14 years doing only roof cleaning....you don't even own a pressure washer, and you guys clean 20 roofs/day and charge thousands for each, because we all know you ain't no whore. LOL!

And, for those here seeking information, decide for yourself.
Apple Roof Cleaning has been helping people on the Internet LONG before most of these guys were even in business, at ZERO financial gain to myself.

We do NOT sell anything, but local roof cleaning services here in the Tampa area.

That put's us at a bit of a "disadvantage", because we have no way to entice the "support" of anyone with "sweetheart deals" on sales of equipment, or "promises" of work on big commercial jobs .....

Use your common sense, and remember that ALL you read on the Internet is not ALWAYS what it seems to be!

You got THAT right...which was what prompted my prior response to your silly post.

Question EVERYTHING you read, and make up your OWN mind ?
I have made up my own mind, based on my own experience. However, since it doesn't agree with YOU, I must not be making up my OWN mind, eh? LOL!!!

Hello Tim!
It was great to talk with you the other day man!
Sorry I had to go so quick, I was really getting into it!

It is great to talk to guys like you, Thad, Russ, Thomas, and others who have the "Fire" a burnin in them too!

One wouild think I would be burned out after 14 years of doing this, bit I am glad I still "have it"

I still get very excited to talk with others, and share their dreams!

Unfortunately, as we discussed, this wand you use will PROBABLY not work on the smaller pumps our friends are currently using ?

But, I see you also like a gun, as do I.

Thanks for pointing out the obvious thing I neglected to mention, having BOTH hands free!

Another thing I forgot to mention Tim is that we CLIMB roofs.

I simply tie my hose/gun around my fat azz waist sometimes, and CLIMB ...

I curse those Boiled Peanuts, Beer, and Country Ham every time I have to climb.

Try climbing a steep azz roof with a 4 foot PVC wand, LOL

It would be MY luck it would wind up where the sun don't shine when I fall:mad:

BTW, we NEVER turn on our pumps, UNTIL our guy is up in place on a roof!

No need to fight the weight of a hose.

Being a Fireman Tim, I know this is old stuff to you, and second nature.
But, one must always remember there are new folks reading this stuff, and we can't assume they know all the tricks of the trade ?

Hey, I saw an ""Obituary"" in the paper the other day ....

It read .... Here lie's Joe, he was so kind
Died with a PVC wand sticking out of his behind.
As he lay dying, at the crack of dawn
He said "PLEASE don't turn that Ball valve on!

now that obituary is a classic

Unfortunately, I am unable to accomplish this with people defending those who teach incorrect methods ?

So, let those who's teachings conflict with mine engage me in a debate, and prove me wrong.

That way, we ALL benefit, and see what is right, and what is wrong ?

Just as a Politician is open to criticism, so is a Teacher.
It goes with the territory.

Every time I make a recommendation, it is open to criticism and discussion.
I accept that, and other Teachers must do so as well.

Only by debating, and challenging each others idea's, will we improve our industry.

Chris,

Debate is a fine thing. Disagreements are not the end of a relationship between adults. Sometimes two people will never agree on an issue even though they are both fine folks.

Ad Hominem attacks are not cool, though. If Don has some secret agenda he sure is taking forever to implement it. My opinion is that he is a helpful guy and likes meeting people and talking biz. Only he could ever prove that I'm wrong about that.

We were supposed to get together when I was in Orlando, but Don had something come up. It was personal and sad and I completely understood.
He offered to take me on some roof jobs. There is no reasonable way he expected me to be his customer since I live so far away. I didn't even know he sold anything for months. He was just being a friendly guy. I am the same way, and I bet you are too.

Don helped a bunch of people get their feet wet. They gave him an honorary title- he didn't call himself anything other than 'Don'. Don't let jealousy make you bitter. Life isn't fair. We all live with that.
Sometimes you have to let people do things the way they want to, even if you are convinced that your way is better.

Differ'nt strokes fer differ'nt folks.

You gotta realize, Chris has his way of doing things (the "right" way) and other have their way of doing things (the wrong way). That's how he sees it, and it doesn't matter what anyone says...He's going to continue writing these silly long posts talking about how he's a pioneer and he's been in business for FOURTEEN YEARS...

No one is forcing you to adopt my suggestions.
Your opinion has been noted, and allowed.
How about showing me the same courtesy ?

Of course you can post your opinion...

As far as "allowed"...by whom??? By YOU??? LOL!!!!!!!

I'm doing nothing more to you than you have done to Don Phelps for months...So stop whining about it. Suck it up and take it like a man.

You ALLOWING other to make posts and making note of it.Did Grant make you the official record keeper of PWI?

You say what you want and get bent out of shape when other do the same.
Just a week or so ago you were ready to put all this Phelps vs Tucker crap in the past. Then you drag it over here.
Don is not a bad guy,he's helped a lot of people get set-up doing low/no pressure roof cleaning for zero financial gain.Yes,He sells equipment but his advice is not tied into a larger scheme to sell anyone anything.Matter of fact Don is very low key about his equipment sales.I have never bought a thing from Don,never got an at cost offer on anything and he and I still talk.
Your methods and his aren't the same and that is the bottom line.I do roof with an X-jet and get great results,so if I tell someone how I do it,will my method be wrong also?

There are better ways to clean roofs then with an X jet.
I am here to TRY and teach the best way.

And, BTW, I am SURE Don and you still "talk", that is becoming more and more painfully obvious every time you post!

:D

I aware there are better ways to clean a roof than with an xjet, but we do an average of 12 a year.Don has preched that exact point to me more than once.
Don and I touch base every couple of months to talk about cigars and business.

We are all painfully aware you pioneered a lot of the techniques used in low pressure roof cleaning.I mean after all you tell us all the time.

I'm still wondering how it is Chris is allowing me to post my opinion....

The more you open your mouth, Chris, the more your agenda becomes apparent.

You talk about all this wonderful information you've shared with all of us poor dimwits, but I really don't see it. What have you contributed on these forums? What pioneering ideas? Other than stirring the pot and attacking Don Phelps, what exactly have you done that is of a positive nature on these fourms???
