Caustic Thickeners for Kitchen Exhaust Cleaning-surfactant

What if any results is anybody getting from using a thickener chemical in with their caustic, like that Bonzi stuff, which is pretty expensive. If you took some Bonzi, like 2 cups say, and mixed it into a hot caustic brew, would it thicken and stick on the grease. Like they say it does? That would cut out the extra step of the compressor and foamer, which are 2 extra things I would rather do without. After all the foamer is to make the chemical stick to the grease longer. If anyone uses Bonzi, inquiring minds would like to know.

Having a caustic stick like grease sounds pretty dangerous. I know you want dwell time, but you also want to be able to rinse it off semi easily right?

Bonzai and Corn Startch should rinse off pretty well if you are rinsing that is....

Here's the deal, about 6 years ago we were buying and using a chem called Bonzi - from colorado, denver, I think. It was designed for use on oriental grease, thus the name. It sprayed like water but turned to a gel when it hit the grease and started to eat at it. It rinsed really well. It is thixotropic - that's what that's called. It worked pretty well, but the price was killer so after one drum we stopped it and went back to caustic and dawn and whatever was available. What occured to me was if regular caustic would stick to the grease as well if you mixed in some Bonzi. Corn starch is a mess to use and won't pump through a sprayer unless you remove the nozzle. We don't have any left and wondered if anyone was using. The website is: chemspray.com

Not to be selling for anyone but the People over at Guardian ( The magnetic Scraper place) have calle dme a couple times to tell me about a new Hood cleaner chem they have developed called "A better solution" I have not tried it but they claim it works real well and offered me some great discounts to offset shipping cost...all I know is the scraper is out of this world!!!! It might be worth a phone call Indy....

I don't know if it is the exact some but hood monster made by sunbrite mixed with dawn gave a gooey result that stuck but did not foam. The same hood monster with a foaming agent worked much more agressively when it was shot on chineese grease.

"A better solution"
This is a non-caustic chemical. E-spec makes one called "hood-pro".

hood monster
This is a heavy duty caustic.

What I am getting at is as I get older - I am trying to simplify our process, not complicate it. Compressors and foamers, BTW which we have, are just two more pieces of crap to bring to a job. The bonzi can be applied with a Chapin pump up sprayer and it foams/ gels the grease and rinses off nicely The downside is it's cosltly. What if we used our own casutic mix (cheap) and added something like a couple of cups of bonzi to it, would we end up with a cheaper chemical that sticks nicely to the grease, is "hot" and rinses off well. I know about the corn starch, not so good for rinsing! there's also xanthan gum which can be added to caustic as well, hard to find. In other words, a cheaper, simpler, more effective and less involved process. That's all - and has anybody tried it? Nobody here seems to use bonzi anymore, so I guess I'll order some and see.

No sweat Alexy. Thanks for the input. I appreciate your comments. You like the foamer with all the gear and it's working well for you which is great. How much did you have to pay for the foamer additive with shipping from the west coast? Shipping that distance is usually about 100 bucks.I know from Denver it's a killer, too. Does the Morgan foamer stuff last long enough?

Your spot on on the shipping it was 105 bucks for 2 5 gallon buckets, it's not a hazmat so shipping was UPS ground. I started in May withthe foam and I have almost finished the first 5 gal bucket. It is good stuff, I know jason had some probs with his stuff

Alexy, where on the West Coast do you get your foamer? Is all foamer the same or are there differences?

Alexy, I know I've asked you on the phone, but I don't remember what you said...but How much Foaming agent per gallon/5 gallon do you use. I thought you said 4 oz./5 gallons??????

4oz per gallon or 1 cup per 5 gallons is a good start you can use less and get away with it. The delco stuff works well too and has a red tint so it's pretty.

It's a conpiracy Ant...I get a different answer from every single guy every single time I talk to them....I think they are serious about paying our FOAMER Dues...then we'll get to the bottom of the perfect sauce!!!
