Scott and mike forum

Neither do I. I am pretty sure that Mike does not even stroll through on a regular basis.

Well, I've got nuthin but luv in my heart for you, Scott, and Ron, and my other fellow fleet washers!! I feel all warm and fuzzy inside! (At least there is more positive energy over in this thread than the KEC thread)

Blaine, I see you run propane? Very nice trucks by the way.

Thanks Ron. Yeah, we do because we like the fact that it is much cleaner than the alternative that everybody else seems to use. It does have it's dangers however, so you can't be too careful....What do you use, or do you have to use anything at all with the climate you have down there? Maybe you have to cool the water instead, huh? It's times of the year like this that I wish we were based in Arizona! You've got a great state! Outside of Minnesota, Flagstaff is the other location I would like to live in. I like it because you still have the seasons there but they're not as severe, and you just have to drive a little to have warmer weather.

Some KEC guys are full of hate!

Flagstaff is great, but the locals call it poverty with a view. Not a lot of industry there.

I guess I could see that, although if you don't look for it specifically a person doesn't notice it as much I guess. I've spent some time in Arizona and every time I've loved it. Tombstone, Tucson, Phoenix, Williams, and Sedona are all cities that I've spent time in, and I've also visited both the north and south rims of the Canyon, the old time junk yard of Jerome, the donkeys of Oatman, the drug-influenced paintings of Chloride, the Mesas and indian ruins and cliff dwellings northeast of Flagstaff, we took the uncharted road through the desert from Jerome to Williams, and I loved the big saguaro cactii(sp?) of Tucson. Of course, I have to also mention the Dam as well. It is an awesome state that I feel more people should visit and appreciate. I try to visit when I can. Hey Scott, I've wanted to ask you guys this for some time: Do you and Ron ever fight over accounts?

I give him leads and occasionally he sells them.LOL

I have lost accounts to him and i'm sure he may have to me. I loose accounts to everyone, its the nature of the game.

Since i service over 1100 locations monthly I'm going to loose some.

I cannot and will not do some of the things others will. i do not go out the scope. for example I gave scott a hotel that was several stories, i dont leave the ground and never will.

That is the one that puked when they saw my price... I guess they thought that their maintenance guy could do it cheaper.
No, at this point we have not ever fought over an account. There is one that I took from Ron, but it was a different situation.

2 step cleaning method

OK time for what may be a silly question. I have heard guys speak about using a two step method. Put on a strong Acid and then follow with an equally strong Alkaline. So here is the question, do you have to rinse in between the dwell of the Acid and the application of the Alkaline or does the application of the second count as rinsing off the first? Also does it matter which goes on first? Right now we're doing garbage trucks and other heavy duty (greasy) equipment.

Hi Joe,
You should always start with appying the acid first, then the alkaline soap, which neutralizes the acid, then a good rinse. You don't want to put the acid on last because a rinse will not take the acid completely off of the surface and it will continue to etch the surface of whatever it is on. Also, I would recommend using as mild of solutions of both the acid and alkaline as possible. It is less harmful to the surface you're cleaning, and more importantly, less harmful to you. This setup should help a lot in cleaning garbage trucks up. We do a lot of them and they go very quickly when they're done right!

Blaine, I have heard a lot about how bad garbage trucks are to clean, is there a coating or something you can spray on them to help clean them easier next time or help the crud from sticking so hard?

Just curious.

Biodude - thanks for the pointer there. Could you steer me in the right direction for a phosphate free acid? I've looked and it seems that everyone within 4 hours of me gives you two choices: "phosphoric" or "hydrofluoric". I'm not opposed to using harsher chemicals as needed, but we would rather not make those chemicals a main stay of our processes. We are trying to do recover and recycling and phosphates seem to be frowned upon. I'm beginning to think I should have paid more attention to the instructor and less attention to the girls in Chemistry.

There are products out there that supposedly are designed for that, but the problem with those is that a person would have to get down to the bare surface before you could apply it (which is nearly impossible on garbage trucks), and then it would inhibit you from cleaning them the next time if you didn't. We've found it best just to do a good job on them each time and then each time a person does them they are a lot easier than if a person were to ignore them for a while. Yes it takes a little while longer, but that is why a person has to charge more for those.

Sorry Joe, I was responding to Chris. Ther are a variety of different acids out there. Obviously, some work better than others. I believe that you will find a lot of info on this forum that other people have tried. Usually, the more dangerous the acid, the better it cleans. I have heard of a synthetic acid as well. I tried to have some shipped to me, but they never did for some reason. They claimed it was non-toxic and non-corrosive, but at the same time told me that I couldn't leave it on the surface of aluminum or it would etch into it. It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me, which I told him. I don't know if they never sent it because I questioned him on it or what, but I haven't had the opportunity to test it. I have a sneaking suspicion that it is very expensive. As far as safety is concerned, I feel a person can never be too cautious.

Not my forum and not a chem major either but sulphuric acid does not contain phosphates. Phosphoric acid is made by mixing calcium phosphate rock into sulphuric acid. Sulphuric can be purchased in 93% concentration and phosphoric in only around 70% so it can be very cost effective to use when mixed properly.
