Moss(far right) and lichens(left two pictures) are more than a cosmetic issue on many kinds of roofing materials - asphalt shingles, roll roofing, wood shingle roofs, wood shake roofs. By holding moisture against the roof surface lichens but more so moss speed the wear of the asphalt shingle surface in freezing climates by increasing frost damage to the mineral granule coating on the shingles.

OTHER ROOF GROWTHS

Ok now onto the fun stuff!

View attachment 29755 This is the party animal eating your roof right now His name is GLEO

Ever wonder what types of organisms are living, eating, and growing on your roof? Bellow are three of the most common. Much of the information was gained from both ARMA (asphalt roofing manufactures of America) and independent research. The first , and perhaps most noticeable are the black streaks caused by an organism called Gloeocapsa Magma; which is a species of cyanobacteria an actual BACTERIA living on your shingles it just resembles algae. Get to know the name if you dont plan on cleaning your roof. This is the stuff that is most likely to show up first and cover the entire north side! The black streaks are caused by the bacteria's black UV-protective outer coating. ARMA states "Fiberglass shingles (the most commonly seen amongst today's residential homes) are made with limestone as a filler (in the asphalt). These shingles hold moisture and organic "bacteria food" material longer (especially on the North-side in the Midwest) than the paper/asphalt/ceramic shingles of 20+ years ago. This cyanobacteria causes substantial destruction to roofs causing shingle decay and loss of reflective power.Over time, Gloeocapsa magma breaks down the shingles by feeding off of the limestone granules embedded in the shingles. This decreases a roof's ability to reflect ultra-violet rays of light and shortens the life of the roof.[3]" in your good old, uninvited friend Gloeocapsa is eating the limestone within your shingles. Thats not all ,"The buildup of Gloeocaspa magma on residential properties has led to earlier roof replacements, lowered property resale values, insurance companies canceling policies and increased utility costs as the black stained roofing draws in more heat. ′Contractors Foundation′" again in short a COLONY of this stuff is growing on your roof right now and you still havent given us a call. The extra moister can also promote two other types of growths seen above.
