Tips for Fixing a Leaky Skylight

Hi everyone,

I recently noticed water leaking around my skylight after heavy rain. I’ve never attempted any skylight maintenance before and want to make sure I address the problem correctly without causing further damage.

I’m wondering about the best approach for diagnosing the leak and whether I should attempt a DIY fix or call a professional. Has anyone had experience with skylight repair and can recommend reliable materials or methods?

Any advice on sealing, replacing flashing, or routine maintenance to prevent future leaks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi! Skylight leaks can be tricky, but you can often pinpoint the source with careful inspection. First, check the flashing around your skylight, as this is a common culprit. Look for cracks, gaps, or deteriorated sealant. Sometimes water travels along the roof and appears in unexpected spots, so inspecting both inside and outside is important.

For skylight repair, you can reseal with a high-quality silicone or polyurethane roofing sealant, or replace worn flashing if you feel comfortable on the roof. Otherwise, calling a professional is safest, especially for larger or hard-to-reach skylights.

Routine maintenance includes cleaning debris, inspecting seals yearly, and ensuring proper roof drainage to prevent future leaks.
