6.0 Diesel -vs- V10

Residential and Commercial Pressure Washing Specia
Looking at getting a flatbed truck. After doing some research it appears there are mixed reviews on the 6.0. I'm looking at 2 different trucks. First is a 2007 F550 with a 6.0 with 40k miles and the other is a 2007 F450 with a V10 with 40K. Can anyone give me some feedback and maybe gas mileage I could expect with both.

Thanks for the help

You should get nearly double the mileage in the diesel. Parts are more expensive but they are built tougher in the diesel. You can make your own bio diesel. It would be a waste to burn moonshine in the v10.

Additionally it was the first years that had the issues mainly and you have the last year, 2007 for the 6.0

Here is a very good page telling what the issues were and with proper maintanance they should not be an issue. http://www.internationalpowerstroke.com/6.0_problems.html

I personally would go with the V-10 versus the 6.0L Diesel. I had a 2007 F-350 Flatbed with the 6.0L and couldn't keep it out of the dealership. My old truck is still for sale after over 6 months.

Pat 04-05 were the problem children...over 500 changes to the motor from the early 03's like mine to the 04's.
Kory the only thing I will disagree on is the black onxy head gaskets....there has been a fairly large number in the last year that failed badly.OEM gasket with APR studs has been an awesome combo for most.

You have to know going it there are issue that must be addressed to make it reliable.
Coolant filter,ELC coolant swap will help a lot toward keeping the oil cooler from clogging & an EGR/EGR cooler delete are a good start at building a beast.Follow that with head studs and new head gaskets and flat heads and the 6.0l is a force to be reckoned with.Monitoring this motor is a must either a scangaugeII or gauges to watch coolant and oil temps are something you will want to consider.
I recently had my truck on the dyno and pull 2-576rwhp and 1-630rwhp on factory injectors and a very mild tow tune.

SCT programmers are the favorite among the 6.0L crowd, but I would suggest buying custom tunes vs. canned tunes.Beforemy SCT puked and I reinstalled my edge juice... my SCT canned tunes nearly got me killed because of the lag they had when leaving a traffic light.

Speaking of programmers, what would be a good programmer for a little bit more power for a 1997 Ford 7.3 Powerstroke? Just want some more power, not going to race the box truck.

Power Hungry Performance(PHP) in Winder,Ga has a tuner for the 7.3 that is supposed to be good.I'm not a 7.3 guy so I can't offer much more than that

I used to sell Ford's for 8 yrs. I was scared to purchase the 6.0 Diesel so I went with the V-10 in my 2006 F 250. I love the V-10. It is plenty strong and I am not scared to hook to anything within reason (under 18,000 lbs...lol) The only problem I have with the V-10 is the fuel mileage. I can not get over 10 mpg in the 250 un-loaded but I get 8 pulling my camper and around that with my pressure washing rig. 74K miles with no issues on the V-10. I have also been told the 6.0 diesel, you either get a good one or a bad one, not much inbetween.

I have several of both trucks.
my 07 6.0 is one of my best trucks
my 03 with the 6.0 is by far the worst but it will still out pull almost everything we have.
the v-10 550's i have are a waste in my opinion, gas hogs your better off with a smaller truck
I know if it has a quarter tank of fuel im afraid to try and make it to the gas station 2 miles from my shop....no joke.
and the oil pans on the v-10's rust out quick for some reason and its not an easy job to replace 1.

I have 6 6.0's. My personal truck has 181,000 miles on it. All of mine are 06's, except for one '05. On my truck, I have had to replace a couple of injectors, do the EGR, transmission and the radiator overfow. For what it is worth, I had the tranny rebuilt at about 140k miles, and they said it was the first one they had seen with that few miles on it. Something about spinning the tires towing a wash tire being hard on the tranny. Sounded like a weak excuse to me.
As for the others, so far, I have had really good luck with them. I have not had head studs put on any of them, or head gaskets. They have been absolutely reliable. I know that others have had problems, but that has not been my experience. I do think that the 6.0's are engines that like to work, and be run hard. Sometimes I wonder if guys are being so careful with them, that the first time they get after it, they have problems. Just my opinion. I know my guys want the older trucks before they get in the 2011's because of the engine. I don't know why, because the 2011's are very nice, they just have gas motors.

You need gearing in the rear axle to drive up the mileage in the V10.

Away from pressure washing the 6.0l truck are my hobby.I have a 630hp beast that I enjoy owning and driving.

My 08 V10 is a beast with the 4:30 gears, I have never in 4 yrs had an issue with this truck

For fuel economy I got 7mpg with my 1995 f350 gaser, my 1999 f250 7.3 diesel gets about 14 or 15mpg. Even with diesel costing more at the pump per gallon (about $.50 more), I still save about $20 every 100 miles. After 50,000 miles that's $10,000 in fuel savings. Oil changes and any engine work cost more, but there's more than enough enough room for that.

I would stay clear of the Ford 6.0 motor. They have had a lot of issues with that motor. I have a F250 with that same motor and have dumped $4,000 into the motor. It only has 80,000 miles on it.

The new 6.7L diesel is 1000 times better than the 6.0L It doesn't even sound like a diesel. It's the best diesel Ford has put in a truck since the old 7.3L
