Chem application equipment

What equipment do people use for applying chems (cleaner, brightener, sealent) to decks? Can a newbie get by with using pump up sprayers and still do a good job? Also, how do you clean your equipment so you can use different chems through it i.e. different shades of sealent. Do you need use different pieces of equipment for the different stages of treatment? Are there any videos online that I can watch?

Is anyone likely to be doing any deck work around mid to late September? Would I be able to ride along for a day to see how you do it? This is probably the earliest I can travel away from home. I'm fortunate that I can fly almost anywhere for next to nothing (perks of my present job).

Pete are you a Air Traffic controller?? I was called in for that years ago but I turned it down because I didn't want to be inside all the time. The Money is number one for that civil service job and the perks are great...What was I thinking back then:)

I use a Deckster surflo sprayer that I bought from Sunbrite supply to lay down chemicals and sealer. I just switch out the hoses which keep the chemicals and sealer trapped in them airtight. I also use the x-jet for some chemical applications especially when doing Exterior house washing. A great place in your area to learn the ropes is from the Company Delco who sells Powerwashers and accessories and who also offers training schools, Tapes etc. to help you along in the business.

John,

I'm a dispatcher for one of the airlines (initials AE). Anyone can find information about my job at www.dispatcher.org or www.dispatcher.com, I can't remember which one is correct. All I was asking was whether the dilution ratios were before down streaming or whether that was what the actually ratio of chems put on the surface itself. Thanks for you response. Are you going to the round table in Sept.?

Are you talking about the Roundtable in NC being ran by Celeste and Roger?? I spoke to Celeste today and I would love to come but I will have a major conflict with my work schedule. I will be attending a PWNA board meeting around the first week in October which I had to clear my schedule for. I work 2 jobs and a ton of hours on each.

You should attend the roundtable because you will get a WEALTH of KNOWLEDGE coming out of one of those and the networking is GREAT!!

OK back to your question--The dilution ratio is what you want to land on the surface that your cleaning. Such as HD-80 where at max strength you want 8 oz of HD-80(Stripper) to one gallon of water to land on that surface. This is why a surflo pump is great because you can exact it. I used to use pump up sprayers and they worked but what a pain they are to use. I even used a back pack pump sprayer years ago but when some chemical dripped down my back I retired that sprayer immediately.

X-jet sprayers work good also but they are a bit hairy to use because of the way they spray. If I'm using the x-jet probably the most you can put the stripper down at is 75% of its max strength maybe even less. The Deckster I bought is from www.sunbritesupply.com and if you happen to call there ask for Pete Marentey or his main guy Tracy for they can tell you and help you a ton. If you happen to call them tell them I said hello. There excellent!!

I use the yellow 12 volt power booster for cars with 2 12 volt outlets, 54 bucks at walmart. A 12 volt car adapter from Radio shack 9 bucks. 65 feet of 3/8 poly hose pvc inside 30 bucks. The brass 6 foot extendable wand from northern tools 35 bucks. Shurflo 12 volt pump mounted on the side of the power booster 69 bucks. 2 5 gallon buckets with lids one for deck tergent one for oxalic acid 10 bucks. The filter pack from Northern Tools for the suction hose 12 bucks. All hoses use brass quick connects 15 bucks.

Aprxx $234.00 most have the basic setup allready.

Easy to assemble light and easy to carry 65 foot hose allows for one setup location on most decks. Fast charge and takes up little room in the truck and will jump start your truck . If the charge dies you simply hook to an AC outlet and your back in biz unlike heavy marine batt's you have to trickle charge.

I use all clean chems and sealer when needed with this setup.

With the cost of pump ups good ones around 59 bucks times that by 4 during a good year plus the frutration of cleaning them and pumping your around $216.00 and your working much slower?

You'll never by a pump up again and wonder why you even used one to begin with.
