Considering a Solar Powered Skylight for My Home – Any Advice?

Hi everyone,

I’m thinking about installing a solar powered skylight in my home to improve natural lighting and reduce energy costs. I’ve read a bit about how these skylights work, but I’m curious about real-world experiences. How efficient are they really, especially in areas with less sunlight? Do they require a lot of maintenance?

Also, how difficult is the installation process, and is it worth the upfront investment compared to traditional skylights? Any tips, brands, or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I’ve had one for a couple of years, and overall it’s been great. Even in areas with less sunlight, it still provides noticeable natural light, though it’s brightest on sunny days. Maintenance is minimal, just occasional cleaning and checking the battery if it has one. A solar powered skylight is generally easier to install than a wired skylight since there is no electrical work, though roof access is still needed. The upfront cost is higher than a traditional skylight, but the energy savings and convenience often make it worth it. Make sure the solar panel gets good sun exposure for best results.
