help with my wood deck

hello its chris lagrasta from new york. I AM TRYING TO REMOVE THIS FROM MY DECK, ITS CALLED PREMIUM SOLID COLOR (ORANGE) DECK FENCE AND SIDING WATERPROOFING WOOD STAIN FROM MY DECK AT HOME. IVE TRIED F18 AND IT DIDNT WORK AT ALL. I WAS ABLE TO REMOVE SOME OF IT AND hardly ANY. I APPLIED IT ON A DAY WHICH WAS VERY HOT AND THE DECK WAS ALSO HOT. I HAD TO APPLY A NEW APPLICATION EVERY 5 MINUTES AND LET IT SET FOR 30 MIN OR SO. I USED 15 OZ PER GALLON( I KICKED IT UO ALOT) THEN I USED 24 0Z PER GALLON. NO LUCK. ANY SUGGESTIONS. ALSO I USED F18 ON ANOTHER DECK TWO DAYS AGO AND IT WORKED NICE. WHEN AND HOW DO I USE F8 TO BRIGHTEN THE WOOD(AFTER THE WOOD DRIES OR WHEN ITS WET STILL) FYI I USED AN X-JET TO APPLY THE F18. any other chemicals do you know of. THANKS BROTHER CHRIS LAGRASTA

Chris I'm sure Someone will Be with You

Pics would help.... Down streaming your mix may not be hot enough? Try applying with a pump up sprayer might have better luck.

Some stains are just tough

You can add Butyl to the sodium hydroxide to boost your stripper which you might need for stubborn stains like this.I'm guessing this is Behr acrylic which are very hard to strip! You have to keep the wood wet while it's dwelling. You can lay some plastic down while it's dwelling to keep it from drying out.

The brightener should be applied when the wood is wet after you finish stripping.

This deck will likely be very fuzzy from the strength stripper and the pressure from cleaning.

I use a solvent based stripper on Behr Solid Acrylic. Apply it late in the day and leave overnight and remove the next day. Costly but effective.

That's good to know Everett!

What do you do for the rail does it cling all night enough to work? Also do you lat plastic on the floor?

How is the solvent stripper with plants extra rinsing of the plants?

Holds great on verticals. I use plastic on the floor if they have pets or there are concerns. They come in environmentally safe forms as well like Smart Strip by Dumond (there are others too). Contractor price should be around $40/gallon. Depending on budget I give a price for the whole thing stripped or just doing the floor and leaving a solid on the verticals, many times a two tone deck. Doing one now with white balusters and a cedar tone on the floor.

Sometimes cheaper to knock out the spindles, strip and sand all framed out wood . Buy kiln dry wood and soak in a vat and re apply. No head ache !

Quoted a brutal 3 coa t primer 2 coats of paint and rust oleum of the top of that. $1k for 220 sqftage no rails. Goooo!

3 pages of quotes behind , rain , can't spell, saw warren Haynes last night tribute to Gerry Garcia at tangle wood . Awesome ! Just cooked clams for a crew ! Also a chef or summer chef ?

Certain colors are a compete halt for the in experienced . Orange, orange red ,complete uniform consistency of a solid color.. sSTop!

Thanks for the 411 Everett can't never learn enough for those tough jobs!

IT's his own deck a good place to practice huh?

GREAT deck to practice on! I hate these jobs but I price them accordingly. These are very easy for a inexperienced guy to get burned on. I sand a lot of decks as Jim was talking about and these stains (Behr) they don't sand easy either, gotta get paid for your time either way. These decks will easily take double the time a deck with another kind of sealer or stain applied to it.

1. Diamond Jim, you need to check your spelling on a fairly important detail above.

2. Everett is right-on, you can strip virtually everything, and many strippers are Harsh. Big black gloves, mask, kill-the-plants Harsh.

3. Stain penetrates, Paint covers. If semi- or solid stain is on the material, and you are stepping up on darkness, you can get by with sanding/stripping the worst areas and multiple coats of new product will work.

4. On every deck job, we stain/paint an extra piece of lumber for our Color Guide display with that specific product. Really works well, especially when you pour some water on the samples and the H2O beads up all nice-like.

lots of help this is great I CUT OUT MY SPINDLES (GOING BACK WITH PLASTIC) I WILL TRY THESE GREAT IDEAS. IM THINKING of SPRAYING AT NIGHT AND LETTING IT DWELL FOR HOURS whats you thoughts on severe strip deck stripper from sun brite(liquid)

Spraying what at night? the stripper? or the final product? Be wary of dew. also, these heavy-duty strippers (never used Sun-Brite's btw) are heavy-duty. Test in inconspicuous area, and if you've never used a particular product before, leaving it to dwell for 8 hours may be a bit much.

Some stains are just tough

If it's Behr or similar ,sometimes I just flip the wood anymore, if the cuts and angles allow. Re-sink it prep and stain w/BGA.
Saves me alot of time, and gets me out of the direct sunlight.
