home security systems

Whats the best home security system? Our home was broken into and ransacked Monday. The sorry A** thieves stole around $8000 worth of things from us while my wife was gone to the grocery store. We live about 15 miles out of town in the country, so not sure if I need a system that is monitored or just something VERY LOUD to run crooks off.

Any suggestions?

I can't tell you what the best security set up is but I can tell you I have a Swann Security set up at my house on 4 channels. But it works great and I can view it from my phone. It has apps for android and Iphone so you can monitor your home from your phone. It has worked great for me so far. If you want to upgrade from my version get the 8 channel set up and you should be able to catch these thieves from every direction. Attached is a picture of a monitor I use from home. You can also view it from any computer in your house as well.

I'm sorry these jerks robbed you. Hope this helped. Here is a link to Swanns website:http://swann.com/region/usa/entry/us

Got mine at Fry's electronics. swann.jpg

And if your looking for alarms, just get something that will wake you up so you can grab your gun!

Since you live out in the country, I doubt that loud will make a difference by itself.

I would go with monitoring and maybe the sirens also besides the cameras.

Problem with cameras, the punks wear the hoodies and you cannot get a good image of their faces, at least here anyway.

You need to opt with the remote controlled silent alarm that alerts your cell phone so you can see if someone is really there via smart phone and then activate the remote controlled pistols, shotguns or uzi's to take care of business before calling the police to pick up the trash. hahahahaha

Sorry you were broken into, I had some tools stolen here from my house last week while I was sick, 2nd time this year. I would really like to catch these people or see their faces so later on something will be done.

I bought a swann 8 channel a month or so ago and I will be putting 12 cameras on it to monitor the house. From being in Law Enforcement, a home security system doesn't do much and the police don't make responding a high priority as 90% of them are false alarms. In fact, Huntsville charges you to have an alarm system registered with them and you get one or so false alarms, then after that, they fine you for wasting the officers time.

I would recommend getting a very
good setup so you can get good video. I chose the swann because of the quality and the customer support I received from them when picking out a system.

BTW, Ty, they told me they should have an iPad app out by the end or first of the year:)

Thanks for the ideas guys! I looked at Swann's website earlier. I haven't looked hard and read much on there yet, but do the 4 channel and 8 channel systems have something that triggers them or do they just record all the time? Is there an actual alarm or are they just video systems? I like the idea of being able to look at the cameras via smartphone or web!

Christopher, thats the best idea with the alarm triggering the guns! LOL

I do have neighbors that can see my house, but they are far enough away that they couldn't tell what was going on without binoculars but the could hear a loud alarm.

I am installing new (better, stronger) doors on the entrances, and also adding extra support in the walls behind the door frame. Also got some security glass doors from Lowes that have a $1000 guarantee against being broken into. Maybe with the new doors and the addition of a security system, that will be enough next time for the punks to say heck with it and leave.

I have always lived out in the country and we never even hardly locked the house doors unless we left when I was a kid (in the 80's). I have NEVER had anything stolen from my house. Times are changing though and I dont think its anywhere near as bad now as it will be in the near future!!

A large dog would not be a bad idea. The criminals fear a K-9 dog more than a taser or firearm.

We haven't had much luck with dogs. Haven't had one in a couple years, but the last 2 disappeared. Not sure if coyotes got em or if someone stole them. I kept them on a 100 ft. runner chain till I thought they were mature enough to run loose. Then I would just let them loose during the day and tie em back up at night. The last one was a walker coon dog and she wouldn't get out of our yard. I left her off the chain a few nights cause she would bark all night if I didn't. Well after a couple weeks, we never saw her again. The first one broke his collar and got loose from his chain one night and never saw him again.

I have just not wanted to get the kids (and myself) attached to another dog and it come up missing again. I grew up in the country and had the same dog from the time I was 2 till I was 20. He was never chained up and I HATE to do that to a dog. At the same time, I have never had a dog in the house and ain't sure I could get used to that either.

I don't hear the coyotes like we did a few years back, may have to try another dog soon. My girls are both animal lovers and my youngest wasn't even born yet when the last dog disappeared.
