I quit !!!!!!!!!

Russ Spence

Commercial Pressure Wash Expert
after careful consideration and many sleepless nights I am following a pattern I felt I never would , I have decided it is in the best intrest of my business that I step from behind my wand effective Jan. 1st, yes I will no longer be a part of the crew , I will be concentrating only on the sales and marketing end of my business .
After 12 years I will no longer be our front man on the street , Ron told me a year ago that I would one day find myself in that position , so we will see how it goes ...... makes me a bit nervous and to tell the truth I think I will still have to clean from time to time just to keep my sanity

Congrats Russ. I bet your biz will really grow now, with you marketing it full time. You are obviously a smart businessman.

But you have to keep an eye even on your best workers now. I had to go out in the feild this week and I will be doing washing all next week. I have found recently that my guys arent producing as much as I think they should, just little stuff, like taking to long to set up, just sort of taking their time doing things, so I have tol;d them they arent producing and it will be reflected in their raises and some may lose their jobs if they dont step it up a bunch. I told them I pay them 100% of their pay, I expect 100% production.

theres been a few little things that werent cleaned to our standards and its happen more than a few times when I went and inspected, today I had 2 guys go back to a job on their own time and do over what they did the day before. I tell the guys to double check their work and they havent. So Im not paying for continous mistakes. The agreed and we put it in writing.

I dont like doing it, but recently it started happing more often, so thats why I will be washing the next couple weeks, to whip them into shape. I figure they got lazy because I wasnt around as much, They will shape up I promise.

So just watch your crews, it just started happening. I even demoted my brother in law, who is a very meticulous worker, but he was coming in a few minutes late 1-3 times a week, over sleeping Im not going to have it

Sorry for the babbling,I just figured this may happen to you in the future, you need to watch for it

CONGRATS AGAIN. I like not spraying and doing the other stuff, you will too..YOUR THE KING!!!!!

I was talking about this very thing with my wife today. The tough part is that I am in the same boat as most of you, plus I am a bit of a workaholic and actually enjoy an occasional 16 hour day. So, for now, I am going to continue washing all of the jobs that are really important to me, and let employees do the less profitable jobs. That means that I am going to have to decide what the average hourly will have to be for me to make it worth my time to do the job.

Congrats Russ!! I've been slowly but surely getting to that stage in my business. This year I had 3 guys working 5-6 days a week since April but got a little slow by July where I had to let one guy go. Today I still have 2 guys working between 4-6 days a week but to do that I cant get behind the wand. Some days I make great money and other days I probably make much of none because I need to keep these guys busy or I'll lose them. I think for this year I powerwashed with them at most 5-6 times. It took me like you 12 yrs to get to this point and it is worth it because its sure nice to tell them what to do then doing it myself..plus I'm not getting any younger and working the other job nights untill next June has worn me down about as far as I can go.

I am so looking forward to next year when I add Landscaping to my business along with Parking garages....and retirement....to work more;)

I enjoy the heck out of not being behind the wand. I just wouldnt be productive behind the wand at least 6 months out of the year. Between calls, estimates, meetings, inspecting etc, I would have to stop to many times in a day.

Plus, its just to darn hot for this ageing, gaining weight, handsome guy

russ there is always something to do and you will fill that time you use to spend washing. Sounds like you are the top dog in Bama, wait until your out selling 5 days a week. The sky is the limit

Scott good luck going for it

OMG , I Will Need More Equipment , Let Me Go Call The Bank ! Hahahaha

I had that same realization when just the other day.

Unlike you we have just 1 rig,To make the jump from full time owner/operator to an 3/4 business owner 1/4 operator will require some new toys and employees(I'm so looking forward to that endeavor).
I would have never believed that the last 6 to 8 months would have gone the way the have for our small family business, but with prayer and perseverance good things do happen to people who are patient.
