PASADENA - Amy's Fast Food will be without its trademark flair for a while after its roof caught fire Wednesday evening.

Firefighters were called to the restaurant, 531 E. Walnut St., at 6:15 p.m. and contained the two-alarm fire in about 10 minutes, said Pasadena Fire spokeswoman Lisa Derderian. No one was injured.

They cut holes in the tiled roof for ventilation, working above an awning that read, "Amy's Fast Food with Flair."

The blaze began as a grease fire, Derderian said. It caused $70,000 in structural damage and $40,000 in content damage.

The fire appears to have started in the kitchen, said manager Syed Yousuff.

Only one person w as in the restaurant, as the restaurant attracts mostly a breakfast and lunch crowd, he said.

The cook was making the customer's burger when he noticed flames and smoke coming from behind the charbroiler.

The fire spread through vents and spaces in the attic of the 1,500-square-foot building. Flames could be seen shooting through the roof when firefighters arrived, Derderian said. The restaurant will reopen pending a health inspection.

Amy's has been around for 20 or 30 years, passers-by said.

"It's a longtime Pasadena fast-food place," said Pete Harkema, 57, an administrator at nearby Fuller Theological Seminary.

Harkema said the restaurant, which serves Mexican and American cuisine, is especially popular with students from the seminary.
