Pulling Water from a Hydrant

Does anyone know who I can call that will actually answer my questions and tell me what I have to do (legally) to pull water from a hydrant? I have been told that I have to give a $700 deposit to get a meter but every time I call I press 1 for english and you would thing I was speaking chinese. Nobody with the county seems to know the policies and procedures for this. Does it always have to be a hassle dealing with the county? Hillsborough County that is. You try to do things the right way and this is what happens. Any info would help. THANKS

Spencer,
This sounds like a subject the new UAMCC will look into and share with members. Another great topic to grow our businesses. I don't know how much of a problem it is, but it shouldn't be too complicated? Thanks for sharing.

Dealing with the local authorties can be a problem. One thing they will probably require of you is that you have an air gap on the feed line. That means a separate line the hydrant hose hooks to that is not physically attached to the tank. Usually the gap has to be twice the diameter of the feed line. So if you have a 2" feed you would need a 4" air gap. Hydrants are part of the municipal water supply and they don't want to risk contamination with anything in your tank that could back flow.

you are making it to complicated.

#1 Get an address of where the hydrant is

#2 go to the utility dept. that handles the area your cleaning (pick size 5/8 or 2" and so on)

#3 give them address and check for the deposit

#4 wait for them to install

I was told by some other pw's around here you have a meter you keep with you and use when needed at different hydrants and then at the end of the month you take your meter down and pay the bill for water usage. Trust me, I don't want it to be complicated. I just want to hook up, fill and work. Still waiting on a return phone call.

That is the way it works here, you have to pay a deposit on the meter and then pay for the water usage by the gallon

Some municipalities are different. I had one where they installed and chained the meter to the hydrant. It was only good for that one hydrant and I could not take it anywhere.

Here you pay about $30 a month rent and call in the meter reading once a month. $50 deposit. They have the hydrants color coded for different water companies. I see guys using them all the time with no meter at all. I also saw one of the meters for sale on craigslist a month ago. If in doubt find out who someone around the hydrant pays their water bill to.

Each area is different. Some counties rent the meters and others will come to your work area and install them. Most places will ask to see your equipment first to be sure you have the air gap before they will do anything.

or just say screw it and do this

Thats what one of the guys here does. He uses an unmarked white truck with a orange utility flashing light on top so nobody suspects anything. He just looks like a city worker.

Nice meeting you too Chris. Hey, did you have a problem getting answers from the county?
Never ASKED brother man, I just DO IT :)
Then, I play dumb if kawt
