Question for the wood guys

Residential and Commercial Pressure Washing Specia
I don't do a lot of wood work but do occasionally get a request. Could you wood guys give me a little input?

job I am looking at is about 75 6x8 sections of stockade fence. Not previously stained or sealed with moderate mold coverage.

Approximately How long should it take to pressure wash / prep this fence for staining?

Approximately how long should it take to spray stain this fence (one side only)?

Thank you for your input

600' of fence? It really depends on its condition but in general a crew of 2 washing would generally knock out that in one day. Condition will make a pretty big difference in the time needed.

2 guys on Surflos could have that finished out in a day too. The only problem there is we will NEVER only do one side. The stain will seep through to the other side and you'll have some ticked neighbors. Not only that the preservation aspect of sealing a fence is pretty pointless if you only seal one side of it.

Thanks Greg, I'm originally from Indiana also. Down here everyone hooks into each others fence and there is no separation between your fence and your neighbors. Where I lived in Indiana you could not put a fence on the property line

We see a bit of the shared fencing as well around here. Somebody paid to have it installed and whomever that was picks the color :) We just always try to run it by the neighbor so all are happy. On occasion it will get us additional work that way as well.

Greg we are just getting started in the business and have really only done some house washes and decks. So you are saying if someone wants their fence cleaned and stained you have to do both sides, including the neighbors?

We personally wont do only one side. The finish we use is a penetrating oil product and it will go through the fence to the other side. There are products that would work in this situation (acrylics and heavier finishes) but thats not our system. Even the chems can cause issues on the other side if your not careful.

We use Ready Seal so probably best not to do one side. So do you have the client ask the neighbor about staining it?

No they dont get much more pentrating than Ready Seal. Yes we just have the client ok it generally.

You run into many issues where the neighbors don't want the fence done on their side? So the client then is in a sense paying for one side of both their neighbors fence to be done. Lol. I would think that after you do that one side the neighbors would often times maybe want their fence done as well, but I could be wrong.

Thats where you have to make them understand your sealing 1st to preserve their investment and second to look nice. With that in mind they understand why sealing only one side doesn't make sense. Every year I run into 1 situation where the neighbors don't get along and there are difficulties in getting to the other side. In that case we have to pass as I dont want the liability that the neighbor brings when their side looks like crap :) We have picked up additional fence work off the neighbors many times.
