Roof cleaning with low pressure!

When cleaning roofs using a pressure washer, can you just remove the QC nozzel from the end of the wand and release the pressure from the gun. I have 3000 psi 5gpm machine and I was wondering what the psi is without using a nozzel. Will this hurt the uploader?
I want to get somewhere around garden hose pressure.

Thanks,

I don't know what pressure you'd have but, I will run with a wand only at times (with no tip) to get the bugs off of the house ( where the soffit and wall meet) but remember that the oring will eventually fly out of the end.

Use the chemical (black) tip. If you need to reach high, try drilling-out a 0 deg tip. This will give you a straight stream at about garden hose psi. Or...you could do as many (most?) do, use chlorine and there is no need to rinse - except the flowers/grass/shrubs/anything you don't want dead.

Seriously, 6 to 8% applied with a Sure-flo type sprayer (I like 1.8 gpm) will work very well. I use this on 1 story buildings and I clean from the ground. For taller structures, I hire a monkey (former roofer) and he walks the peak, spraying down using a similar set-up.

Tips

You can buy tips that are bigger than the chem/soap tip.
These are the best for the spider webs and wasp nests

Chlorine?

John, thanks for the reply. Will the chlorine damage the shingles over time?
Most of the houses in my area do not have gutters, I will have to pre water everything, right! and then rinse.

I have seen no evidence of any damage to shingles from chlorine - I have seen it for sodium hydroxide. As to run-off, pre-wet and rinse as you go. An assistant on the ground is best or run a sprinkler. If you spray from the bottom up, there is less run-off. Some rinse, some don't. I usually don't.

john
i was gonna try your way yesterday and not rinse but there was no way this stuff would have come off without a solid rinsing ......do you ever have this problem or is alabama mold and mildew that much tougher than whats in virginia.....just curious....anyway the roof was 12 years old ans it turned out great but i would like to know more
