squirrel cage

I have a customer that has a squirrel cage and it has a hard time sucking air at the plenum, Up stairs is a different story, it almost blows you off the roof.

I felt for broken seams but still can not find any thing wrong.

What test can I do, or some insite on what could be the problem.

They have went to the trouble of installing another air vent in the window to help on the draw.

It will not draw properly if insufficient make-up air. If a hard fuel (wood fired) pizza-type oven duct we have seen horizontal sections completely occluded as a result of previously cleaner who just didn't know how to clean these systems.

The only access panel is located at the top of the cage.

It does not have a code type panel, more of a make shift panel.

I have not cleaned the place yet, he wants to see if I can fix the exhaust first.

Do you think the panel has lost its glue under it. The place really dont need alot of movement, more of heat type ovens than any thing. It collects more dust then grease.

Thanks for replying guys.

Perhaps an anemometer reading at the plenum? These are great instruments and no longer costly - under $100.

Matt.
Check blower for proper rotation.
Fan will appear to be sucking or blowing air at the roof top, but it's just cavatation or circulating air within blower.
Change rotation on most split phase/ single phase motors by swapping the red and black leads at the motors switch.
Check motor amp draw with clamp on meter, set rpm using adjustable sheeve, stay below full amp load rating on motor!
When most fan are running backwards it will appear from the hood or plenum that air is being exhausted only with out much pull.
Hope this helps. Have a Great New Year

Ditto all the above, with a question. How do you determine the proper rotation if no markings to indicate proper rotation are found?

fan rotation

Bryan, The way to tell if the fan is rotating in the correct direction is the fan blades should knife into the air flow on the intake side ( duct side ) of the fan. If the blades are knifing into the air column, the fan is pulling air. You will have to reverse the wires on the motor to get the fan to turn in the correct direction, as Scott posted earilier.
