Starting Business

I just joined this forum, and I am very impressed with the comradery here. I learned alot; from the short time here, and I have got some good Idea's that I would like to implement to my new business from other forum members.
Since, I'm new at this, I could use some advise on generating some business. Can anyone give me some pointers? As far as bidding on jobs, how do you charge, by the size of the job, or by the hour, or both. If you use both methods, what is the criteria for
using these?

Thank you to all that replied to my questions, your advise is greatly appreciated.

Sincerly,

Tim,

You need to tell us in what are are you going to concentrate your efforts. Will you be doing residential, commercial, or both. Then houses, flatwork, fleets, wood, etc., let us know which and then will be better able to direct the answers. It is good when starting out to figure out both ways of pricing that you mentioned. In the beginning you may have trouble figuring it out by time. It also may take you longer than someone else.

For example, suppose it takes ABC Company 8 hours to do a job with their equipment and experience @ $100.00/hr. for $800.00 total. Then you come along and it takes you 12 hours to do it. You may charge too much for the price it should cost to do the job. There are many jobs that are charged by the square foot or linear foot and I would recommend using these prices in the beginning until you get the timing down. Keep track of your hours on a job though. I am sure you will find the answers you are looking for here. Also, use the search function at the top of the board and you will find a wealth of history in the older posts that will answer many of your questions. Good luck.
