Think about add Parking Lot Striping

Mark 8262

Residential and Commercial Pressure Washing Specia
I was wanting to add a service to my existing pressure washing business. Many of my accounts are restaurants but I don't think I would want to add hood cleaning right now.

Parking lot striping does interest me. I have about 25 restaurants that I do now either monthly or quarterly along with some gas stations and about 15 strip malls and whatever may come my way. I have good relationships with my customers and could probably do the striping when needed if I added this service. Plus it would give me another avenue to get into new accounts.

As I start to learn about this business could you give me some pointers as to things to learn and look out for & equipment to look at. I have done some painting in the past, I realize this is a totally different business, but I think there is potential for me.

Any advice would be appreciated

That bbs is about the only one out there, there are a couple others but not nearly as big but that is not saying much either.

There were a couple guys selling their trailers with equipment ready to go for about $7,000 each and that might be enough equipment to get you started, just need to buy a little more stuff and then the paint.

Just like any other industry, there are lowballers and hacks that don't want to get the right equipment and do half-a**ed work and hurt the industry, just to let you know.

There are a few annual conventions, the next one will be in a couple months then the big one is World Of Concrete in Las Vegas in January. I have heard a lot of great things about that one, I want to go soon.

Mark,

We do striping. All you need is an airless striping machine, stencils, cones, chalk box, meter wheel and paint :). Buy keson meter wheel and chalk box, they are the best.
The best, absolutely best machine is Graco Line Lazer IV 3900.
You have three types of striping: Existing re-striping, striping on new seal-coating and new striping. I wouldn't suggest you to start with new striping. There are DOT regulations for new striping that you need bigger experience to know them.
The existing striping and striping over new seal-coating are easy.
For a first time, rent the machine from Sunbelt Rentals. New machine cost around $5k.
I would tell you everything about striping because I love it :), but this is not the right place and it will take me too long to tell you all the little details.
I would suggest you to buy a very good book about striping: BOOK
Also check this guy's website, very useful tips: WEBSITE

I hope this will point you to the right direction :).

Dimitar,

Thanks for sharing, its funny after getting finished with one job the other day I approached the manager of restaurant 60 feet away and asked if they would be interested in our service, she quickly replied "we do that ourselves", needless to say the place did not look that great, as she declined a demo, she quickly replied "do you paint lines in the lot?"

I got that book a while back, there is some good info in it but if you spend a week training with a company that has been around a while, you will get some great hands on experience, that is what I did besides buy a couple of those books then learn from another different company to learn different aspects of parking lot striping.

Striping can be a great addition to your company portfolio. We offer striping, sweeping, seal coating, asphalt and concrete repairs. And sub the seal coating and asphalt and concrete work. For me this has added 80k in net profit for the company this year all for pushing paper. I am always looking for new items to talk to the PM's about when they give me a couple of minutes.

I also sold striping equipment and paint before I got into this business as well. If you would like more info I will be glad to help as much as I can.
