Your First $ 4 Figure job

I used to run a Multi 1250 too. Was in the printing industry for 20 years and had our own shop for about 3 years. I miss it sometimes.

What other press did you run?

I did enjoy the 4/c work, running the big press, and setting it up. I bet every one has something that I printed in there homes. I had a lot of fun. But is was tuff in a factory all day, the fl summer heat is nothing compare to working over lead pigs or the smell of silk screen ovens and a coater.

I really enjoy what I am doing and working out side is such a answer to prayer.

I have ran mainly small presses Multi 1250 & 1850, Ryobi 2800, AB Dick 360. I had a 17 1/2 x 22 1/2 single color press don't remember the model, I think it was a Hamada. Had a Robertson Vertical camera. Mainly did single and 2 color. Only did a couple of 4 color jobs. Still have ink in my blood. Print shops have a smell that you can mistake

Got something in common with ya guys. I've been printing for 23 years. For the last 10 years I've run a Heidelberg Speedmaster 8 Color perfector press.

http://www.friesens.com/ is my employer....well sort of, I've invested heavy in their owner share program so in some small way I guess I'm part owner haha.

Here is what I ran, Miehle Letterpress, Heidelberg windmill, I was 15
Offset
Chief 17, Multi 1250, 124 Aulia, Multi 1850 2/c, Solna 125. Solna 132, Solna 264. Heideberg 236, Miller 55 2/c. Man 230- Man 430 with coater. Man 440 with coater ;
There is a few more but I cant remeber them,

I got my finger caught in one press on 124 Auli when I was 22. Just when you think your good. Just smash it good enough for a wake up call

I started printing when I was 15 stop when I was 48 to do something easy like pw.
I like this much better

Well if your a pressman then you should have no problem of fixing your pw. Heidelberg knows how to build a press. do you have the scaner that sets your keys? We had it on the Man but it didnt work.
what are you doing for drying a coater?

I took pide in my work that I did as a pressman. Now that had paid off with pw

I forgot, I also ran a chief 17. I started working at a print shop while in high school. I was taking it as a class when I was 14 and got a job running a chief 17 when I was 16 in 1978 and worked in the industry until 1997.

My brother also smashed his finger in an old fashioned letter press. That's how I learned was on a letter press setting hand set type using the California Job Case, I think it was called.

Shopping center in 2007 bid out at 0.10/sf. $1,300. Hard to get that kind of pricing now.

I get them all the time. just cleaned one for .215 and its on a 15 day maint program.

I dont think areas matter, I'll take a challenge from anyone on the BBS. I will have a center in your area sold and on a maint agreement. Of Course since I'm a Gambler I want to make a bet.

Doug, I sell center as high as .44 a foot and have done others for much more.

Yes I advertise .03 on maint programs, the center has to fit a criteria,

I have many agreements with customers at all sorts of different price codes.

Oh yes California Job Case. LOL How about the line a type. When I was in school I never stood by that thing. When I got out I was amazed how fast these guys could set type. I was melting the pigs for that machine. It was 95 outside and the pot was 550 in the room was 130 when I got outside it felt like ac. The good old days :girl_wacko:

We did a couple of jobs that were close to the $30,000 range. I am in the process of closing another $15,000 job for July and right now between jobs where working on a $12000+ house staining job.

I've put in a few 6 figure bids and one bid in the past that was in the high 7 figures.(Thank God I didnt get that one because it was way over my head. I did get a call from the company that thanked me for the bid but I was to high).

There is a small shot also in July or August we may be doing a job that is right under 6 fugures. We actually already did part of that job this past March for $16,000, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we get the rest of that job because I think we can knock it out in no longer then two weeks and the pay will be around$75,000. Sounds nuts but if I get it we'll complete it then I'll post the pictures and explained how we did it here.

My first week in the biz, I washed a driveway for $75.00.

Speaking of printing...In 1977, I opened The Instant Office in Wauwatosa, WI. I bought an AB Dick tabletop, electrostatic (paper or metal) plate maker and set it up in my dad's office. I printed his Computer Graphics Newsletter and did stationary printing, mainly for companies in our building. Anything too big, I subbed to a "real" print shop. I got a 10%discount and added 10 to 15% to the bill. I picked-up and delivered - free. (Of course, I used my dad's car!) I later ran the in-house print shop for Spic & Span dry cleaners in Milwaukee and later worked in a factory printing wrappers fro everything from Alka-Seltzer to Oreo cookies. (The machine was almost a block long! 4 color, extruded wax or plastic coatings, foil...Ah, the memories! Thanks for the trip!

Hows it going fellas just wanted to bring yall back down memory lane If you remember the first job you did for $ 4 figures share your memory what was the job you did and how you felt getting that first $ 4 figure payday......

One month? It will be expensive to overnote those sacks. Everynite fresh ones. YOU better check that out, might be easier to just bet the 2000 of 3000

One of the first roofs we did about $1,200 in jan 08. My first exciting 4 figure was $5500 for 1 days worth of cleaning a clubhouse for an old folks community.

Hey Scott, I thought your pump went South on that job. I power washed the building in one day and the roof was only half done. I assume that you are talking about Bella Vita.
