This is just a reminder that it only takes a second to cause some serious damage. I was washing/de-greasing a power unit mounted on an 18-wheeler trailer. Had the heat turned up and stepped on a hydraulic hose on the trailer. I looked back for a 1/2 second and sprayed my boot. I was wearing steel toe rubber boots and the water cut through the boot just behind the steel. Injected the steam into the boot. 2nd and 3rd degree burns on top and bottom of my foot.

Jeff I wish you a Speedy recovery, so all know Jeff not out of the WOODS. Infection is a Bear in this situation, over the years fortunately we have not seen a Death here on PWI we know of from this injury. How ever Infection after the fact hospitalize a few. Jeff Please if you do not already know take your MEDs. If the doctor didn't give you any antibiotics get some. Extremities are the worst, had a fellow a few years back loose fingers from this type of accident.

Thanks for Posting Jeff , Please if you need anything call.

Prayers are sent for your speedy recovery

Thanks for the support Ron. Accident happened last Tuesday and I have been on anitbiotics since. I was by myself, in the middle of nowhere, and had to drive myself to the hospital. Over the past week, I have had a lot of time to think about how I operate my business. I do a lot of work by myself and I have two guys that I will send out on their own. I don't think we will be working alone anymore. I can't imagine something like this (or something worse) happening to one of my crew and them not having a way to contact somebody.

securedownload.jpgThis is 3 days after. Hopefully tomorrow I will find out about skin graft.

Sorry to hear about that, I went through almost the same thing years ago but with my right hand, lost all the skin on my hand past the wrist.

Good thing you got medical help quick as infections are bad, especially staff infections.

Once you are in the bandage changing routine, make sure you use the silver sulfadiazene creme many times a day as it helps with the scarring and infection.

I lost all the skin and it took about 6 weeks or so until I had new skin, I did not need a skin graft, close but not needed.

I had the liquid blister in the palm of my hand. I posted pictures up over on PT State with Bob's permission, they are gross.

Prayers on the way for speedy recovery.

Wow Jeff, hope you get better quick. Let us know we if we can do anything for you. Can be there in a matter of hours.

Speedy recovery Jeff, it would not have mattered hot/cold you will still get infection when sending water under your skin. I had a helper do this same thing while up on a tile roof, back in the day when we actually P/W tile roofs he was rinsing with the wand and went right over his calf with the wand. He was on antibiotics for 4 weeks and the wound area looked like chopmeat.

Thanks for all the support. Went back to the dr. today and they will doing surgery on Friday. They will be grafting skin on the top of my foot and around 4 of the toes. Dr. said it should hopefully be a 4 week recovery from there.

Just remember to stay safe out there!!

get well soon. no... get well now!

back when i was a teenager i was a cook at a restaurant, burned my hand so bad with tomato sauce that when i shook my hand to get the sauce off, my top layer of skin immediately fell off. roughed it out for a few days without going to a dr. ended up with a nasty infection and took a long time to heal.

man, must be rough being on your foot too. you dont really think about the movements that you make or the things you do with a body part untill it hurts, huh?

Sorry to hear what happened but glad even alone you were able to get to help. Be care with those skin graphs. My Uncle had one taken from his hip to place on his calf after a motercycle accident and the one on his hip was the one that got infected and nearly took him out. His leg heald fine. Good luck and prayers sent.

Here is an update. Things took a weird turn on Thursday afternoon. I was scheduled for skin graft on Friday morning and Thursday evening I received a call from a Dr. at LSU Health Science Center in Shreveport. They saw the pictures on Facebook and did not agree with the skin graft. For those that don't know, LSUHSC has an incredible trauma and burn unit. My original Dr. said that it would take at least 3 weeks for me to see at Dr at LSU. They called me and I met them the next morning!!

Long story short, there is no skin graft surgery. Dr said that is a "last resort" option because there are many risks and also there are so many new treatments that are just as effective.

So now I am "debrading" twice a day and applying a new salve that was developed at the LSU burn center. It is called Scarlet Red and is for removing the dead skin and promoting the growth of new skin cells. Dr. says that I should be wearing a shoe (loosely) within 3 weeks!!!!

I want to thank all of you for your support and prayers. This has been a very trying time but the Lord has truly blessed me and my family. Thank you again!!

That is great news!

I wish I had that stuff, I was changing bandages 2 or 3 times a day for at least 4 weeks.

Glad to hear that there is new technology out there for burn victims to help them out.
