Here is a photo of us using muratic on a brick retaining wall. We X-Jetted it on, let it sit for 5 minutes and rinsed! It worked well and wasn't to bad to use!
There is another photo of some brick pavers used as a patio - we used deck brightener with oxyclic in it for that and as you can see it worked great.

PS: Yes the were repainting the green area that is why we didnt tape it off and they were redoing all of the landscaping as well..... :)

would you feel better if you called it hydrochloric acid ?

Just got off the phone with Ron, and he said there's probably a sealant on the bricks, either wax or epoxy based. So we're gonna have to strip that off to get to the brick. Then do an acid wash.
That was the first time i've talked to Ron, I was expecting more of a Zeus-like thunderous voice. I will tell you this, however, .......I felt something through the phone, some sort of energy, perhaps a Force.......Obi-RON????

We use to clean a interior brick floor at an italian restaurant.. They would put Thompsons water seal on it.. We ha to take caustic and a surface cleaner with some real hot water and pressure to get this stuff up.. It came off in strings... The problem was that the dirt was sealed under the water seal along with the brick. You got to renove the sealant and when you do and get it clean its gonna be dull.. So the customer will probably seal it again.. Good Luck.

Before you strip, try applying xylene. This will re-emulsify the older sealer and release the white haze, which looks like trapped moisture. The sealer should reset itself and dry in a couple of hours.
