Let me first say that I have been lurking and learning for over a year now and this forum has been an amazing resource in my education. Thanks to all that dedicate their time and share their expertise, especially for skills that allow others to produce income.
I was exposed to roof cleaning for the first time while living in Atlanta, from which I moved to Houston 10 months ago. I got a letter from my HOA saying I needed to clean the black streaking stains off of my roof. I called the HOA president directly and asked, "What do you recommend I do about the roof stains? I'm glad to comply, but I don't know how to get them off" Well, he didn't either. He proceeded to tell me that they were sending out the letters as a pre-emptive notification, but that they were not going to enforce any specific compliance date because the board was still "reasearching" what to do about it. He even said if I found out anything to let him know. Ha! I was completely ignorant then too!
Amazingly enough, about 6 months later, while the For Sale sign is in the front yard with house on the market, I get a knock at the door from a guy who asks if he can "speak to me about my roof" So I am thinking the HOA found someone and sent him to my house. Not quite. It was a legitimate roof cleaner who was soliciting business directly with home owners who needed his service. I heard his sales pitch, researched the method, and had him clean my roof with amazing results. He said he learned the process from guys who had been doing it for years in Florida and he mentioned Apple Roof Cleaning, which at the time obviously didn't register. Of course it does now. Don't know if he actually did know Chris Tucker or was just dropping the Apple Roof Cleaning name. His name was Donavan and the company was New Millennium. Can't find him online now, but maybe someone remembers.
Anyway from there on I was a believer! It literally transformed my house into a new house. The neighbors stopped me and asked if I had gotten a new roof!
I am originally from Houston and now coming back I realize that this problem is everywhere due to our crazy humid and hot climate. And almost no one seems to know anything about cleaning the black algae.
I work full time as a marketing manager at a high-tech firm and make a good living, but I have four kids, all girls , and I need to put away some cash for 4 college tuitions and 4 weddings!! I am interested in continuing to learn the right way to clean roofs and maintain a good name for the industry.
I know there are a few others who have started in Houston and that's great, it's a big market that needs to be developed and I keep driving by neighborhood after neighborhood that is grossly infested with the evil Gloeocapsa magma.
So here I go. Got the LLC paperwork going, logo and name done. Website to be up in about 3-4 weeks. Ground man already hired to accompany me as a weekend warrior until we go full time.
