Let me first say that I have been lurking and learning for over a year now and this forum has been an amazing resource in my education. Thanks to all that dedicate their time and share their expertise, especially for skills that allow others to produce income.

I was exposed to roof cleaning for the first time while living in Atlanta, from which I moved to Houston 10 months ago. I got a letter from my HOA saying I needed to clean the black streaking stains off of my roof. I called the HOA president directly and asked, "What do you recommend I do about the roof stains? I'm glad to comply, but I don't know how to get them off" Well, he didn't either. He proceeded to tell me that they were sending out the letters as a pre-emptive notification, but that they were not going to enforce any specific compliance date because the board was still "reasearching" what to do about it. He even said if I found out anything to let him know. Ha! I was completely ignorant then too!

Amazingly enough, about 6 months later, while the For Sale sign is in the front yard with house on the market, I get a knock at the door from a guy who asks if he can "speak to me about my roof" So I am thinking the HOA found someone and sent him to my house. Not quite. It was a legitimate roof cleaner who was soliciting business directly with home owners who needed his service. I heard his sales pitch, researched the method, and had him clean my roof with amazing results. He said he learned the process from guys who had been doing it for years in Florida and he mentioned Apple Roof Cleaning, which at the time obviously didn't register. Of course it does now. Don't know if he actually did know Chris Tucker or was just dropping the Apple Roof Cleaning name. His name was Donavan and the company was New Millennium. Can't find him online now, but maybe someone remembers.

Anyway from there on I was a believer! It literally transformed my house into a new house. The neighbors stopped me and asked if I had gotten a new roof!

I am originally from Houston and now coming back I realize that this problem is everywhere due to our crazy humid and hot climate. And almost no one seems to know anything about cleaning the black algae.

I work full time as a marketing manager at a high-tech firm and make a good living, but I have four kids, all girls :), and I need to put away some cash for 4 college tuitions and 4 weddings!! I am interested in continuing to learn the right way to clean roofs and maintain a good name for the industry.

I know there are a few others who have started in Houston and that's great, it's a big market that needs to be developed and I keep driving by neighborhood after neighborhood that is grossly infested with the evil Gloeocapsa magma.

So here I go. Got the LLC paperwork going, logo and name done. Website to be up in about 3-4 weeks. Ground man already hired to accompany me as a weekend warrior until we go full time.

Good luck, let me know if I can help.

Thanks guys.

Scott, Yes I have seen you get your company out there in the last year and I appreciate the welcome. Great job and from what I can tell you're doing it right. Quality all the way. I'm way up here on the Northwest side near Tomball. With the gas the way it is, if a job is too far or I can't get to it because of my schedule, I have no issue with sharing a lead and passing them your way because I know they will be taken care of.

Building out the trailer in a few weeks. Probably 6 x 10 single axle trailer, 100 - 125 gal PCO tank. Thinking about going with Bandit and Delavan 5800. Delevan as backup pump if something happens to Bandit, I saw you had an issue with yours a while back. Did you get another one after the trailer theft incident? Also could use D-5800 to pull chem to fill tanks...etc.

Lot's I don't know, still learning, but I respect you guys who are doing it everyday.

Sounds like you're on the right track. I would go with the tandem axle instead of the single. I had a single to start with and the "slosh" and sway of the trailer was terrible. Once I got my tandem, I barely even notice the trailer anymore. Call The trailer man in spring. I got my 5x12 tandem for around $900 new.

I did get another bandit. I think there may have been something defective on my last one, because this new one pumps even stronger. I have grown partial to the Flojet from Northern tools as a backup and barrel pump. Comes with a bigger inlet/outlet, and detachable hoses which is nice.

Have you done any roofs yet?

Not to hijack here but Carlos, I have lots of family in Katy and actually used to be a manager for the Saltgrass on Mason Rd. Small world huh. Anyway, welcome Jack.

Welcome -- H town is full of nasty roofs...

We still need to have our own little round table here for all of us to gather data and share ideas etc.

I'm busy right now but I think we should put something together in the near future...

If possible, we could share 12.5% as the trip to Pasadena gets old! I like to have fresh sh when I'm working these roofs..

Give a call if you need any help!

Don't forget, Houston guys-
New Orleans isn't that far and we're having a nice Networking Event in August.
Come on over!

Welcome !!
It IS possible you ran into one of my past "students" :)
I have helped a lot of people, over the years.
Can't remember them ALL
Lots to learn here, and good money to be made, and even better friendships.
Glad to have ya :)

Welcome to the board Jack. I know you will enjoy it here.

Scott D. Thanks for the tip on the double axle trailer. I was going to drop almost $700 on the single axle anyway, so what you're saying makes perfect sense to go double for $200 more. The Trailer Man is only about 15 minutes from my house so I'll go check it out. Going to be pulling with my Suburban until I can get to auction and pick up a work truck.

Hey Jack, Welcome to PWI... Lots of fun, Great advise and many good people here on this board. Live chats, Live feeds to Round tables and just an all around good place to learn. :)

...and on the Round Table event, what a great idea. I would love to participate. As Thad says, probably makes sense to let the New Orleans event go off first and get as many people there as possible and then move it west to H-Town.

Hey Thad speaking of the RT, Do you have a list of people scheduled to go, and a solid itenerary?
