CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say one worker was killed and another injured after a scaffolding collapsed near the South Carolina Aquarium.

Charleston police told multiple media outlets that the men were on the scaffolding working on windows at a condominium around 4 p.m. Monday when it gave way.

Authorities say one man fell to the concrete below and died. His name has not been released. The other man fell into the Cooper River and was taken to Medical University Hospital. His condition was not known.

Officers are investigating what caused the scaffolding to collapse.

Man I hate scaffolding. We run ems calls cause I'm a firefighter and I can't tell you how many times I've heard that call go out. They can be really bad. We have had some lifts fall before too. We had 3 killed when a boom lift fell once. You have to be extremely careful when working of off either of them. Good safety reminder, good post

Rigging training is a must. I have seen many deaths that could of been avoided over the years with just some training and a lead rigger on the job checking everything

I almost got killed on a overpass sandblasting job that was rigged, it hurt and I would never want to see one of my guys get hurt. Accidents will happen, many of the accidents I have seen, aren't accidents at all, its improper or no training.
Window washes I heard have a good training course

OSHA Training can help too, it makes the guys think.

I couldn't feel my hand for two years, also broke my pallet and lost over 30lbs after 3 surgeries. You can die falling off a step

Training and being aware of your surroundings. Be Safe!

Just the other day where I do my "Other Job" they had a guy fall 6' backwards off of Scaffolding and he hit the back of his head on the frozen Dirt. He sat up and complained of back pain and the back of his head was bleeding. 10 Hrs later we got the call that there looking for his next of Kin.

Safety Safety Safety. You just can't say it enough.

Right before I quit working at the refinery, a contractor pulled off his respirator then started climbing down the ladder, at about 6' high, he fell backwards onto the concrete. He went into a coma and the next day he passed away.

It is not really how high you are or what you are on, it is the falling without being tied on to prevent the fall all the way down.

Unfortunately with this guy climbing down, even the fall protection would not have saved him as most of the lanyards are more or less 6' long, especially with the shock-absorbtion device added. He was not tied off when climbing down.

We all need to be safe and use as much protection when working that we possibly can. When you think about it, we all are just one short fall away from being gone.

Have a safe day.

Or your just one short fall away from snapping bones just look at David Vicars who most of us know. I know a few others that fell and suffered compound fractures including my cousins now ex husband who owns a roof business. He fell and broke both ankles with one being mutliple compound fractures which are the worst kind of break.

Him and my cousin Donna's marriage fell apart a couple of years later because of all the drugs he took to fight the pain and the terrible healing problems he had. This was a Dozen years ago. Today he is a multi millionaire because he never does the physical work but he still can't walk without a limp. He is clean from the prescriptive drugs but my cousin now.....thats another story.
