Ashpalt shingle treatments??

I referred someone from my church to a local company here in Richmond, VA that only does roofs. He said they not only cleaned his roof (and it did look nice), but they also applied a "coating" of some sort to it for an additional price. They also offered to apply a "sealant" to it which my friend opted out of.

I am not familiar with either option from reading this forum over the last year. Do you guys know about what they are possibly offering if you've heard of it, and would you mind sharing with me what these two things are, where you purchase them, and/or are they a gimmick?

Thanks.

I don't know what the sealant is that he would be referring to but the coating would more than likely be a mold inhibitor.

Could be water. Like them Florida Guys
There were some guys around here claiming to apply a sealant after cleaning. The sealant on asphalt roofs is mainly for high wind applications. When this stuff gets old it looks like a pealing snake. Its horrible unless you seal it once a year. Rippoff!! Dont believe the hype!

Hmmm, just got done looking at the "Roof-Brite" site. They sell the products to their contractors. Not sure if any other contractors can purchase through them. They claim their products are much safer than using Chlorine Bleach. They stress that using bleach will smoke your roof shingles, landscape, and render your termite protection useless. Any truth to this guys????

Was planning to use the SH and Gription this year. What do you experts advise?!?!?!?

I think it's a ho ax.

can u please specify which "florida" guys you are talking about!! i dont want to be lumped in with anything unethical. after all, these are public post that anyone searching for roof cleaning can read.

I think he was talking about the guy's on the dateline show the other night, but I thought they were in Vegas.

ARMA recommends against roof coatings.

+1. They also recommend chlorine to clean roofs with, not sodium hydroxide.

Mr. Fermoyle, you should do a search for using sodium hydroxide on shingle roofs and see what you come up with. In a nutshell its not recommended.
The use of it requires way to much pressure to rinse, which is what you dont want to do in roof cleaning.

Thanks Chad, I agree with you. I've tried a product that was sodium hydroxide in the past and it was an extremely long rinsing process. I'm going to go with sodium hypochloride 12.5% and Ammonyx. Last year I did a test on a house and used S. Hydroxide on one half, S. Hypochloride on the other and it was so much easier!! Both side still look good to this day, but the "hypochloride won hands down. I've been searching and searching on several sites but just want to have my ducks in a row before I really dive into this. Thanks again Chad and all who've responded!

"Hypochlorite" ----12.5% Sodium Hypochlorite

The new Softwash Systems chems claim that you can offer a 5 yr warranty, I think its an additive in their Green Wash product.
