The other day I was doing a deck, Fogged plants real good with water, Within 2 hours I pulled drop cloth off of plants and had wilted plants from the heat and humidity in area...Heat soars to 95 to 96 degrees with heat index to 105 degrees...Please explain what I can do....Thank god the customer agreed to see if they would come back to health....

Thanks

Matt

you basically steam-cooked the plants, similar to what you'd do with broccoli. I never cover plants unless i'm staining and then i only leave them covered for the amount of time i am in the area. I was staining a deck the other day and i put a tarp over some plants for about 45 minutes. That was enough to begin the wilting. I've tried covering plants when spraying strippers, etc., but i've found they hold up better just keeping them wet and rinsing them. When spraying chems, etc, if they are harmful, put up a blocker on the other side of the rails (i.e., clamp up a tarp, luan, etc.) and this seems to work the best.

Plants are coming back, the 2 hours that I left covered was the time it took to stain... Been getting alot of enclosed decks...Thats o.k. getting good at it, cut my time in half on last job...old timer dont want to touch them... But then again I still bend over to pick up pennys nobody wants...LOL

Be especially carefull when using the hydroxide based strippers around plants.. it will cook em'! Best thing you can do is to soak the plants and their roots and cover them for only as long as necessary. If it's going to be a 2 hour project in that kind of heat you may want to mist them down half way through.

Also, a twin bed sheet soaked with water, will allow the heat build up to escape when tarped over plants.

Reed,

Thats a idea that makes nothing but sense...
Thank you!!!

Matt,

i also use the bed sheets for barrier when putting down ReadySeal. When enough readyseal gets on the sheet, you have somewhat of a sealed tarp. Hd-80 will take some of the sealer off the sheet, but because of water dilution when stripping, it doesn't effect it all that much. Go to Kmart of Wally world for the bed sheets, about 2.50 each.
