    Fertilizer Rust Stains

I got a request today to remove fertilizer rust stains on a driveway and sidewalk. Scott's is responsible for the issue and will pay for the damage that they did. Likely the granules got sprayed on the concrete and the sprinklers got them wet and caused rust-like stains that look like little comets. I tried this on a sidewalk a year ago using a strong oxalic acid mix with no success. Which acid or specialty chemical will get this off and what is the mix ratio to safely do it? Thanks for any help!

The Iron pellets in their fertilizer mix did it. They never blow the oversprayed granuals off the concrete. Ya think they would.

I've seen where OX didn't work too well either. The only thing I have found that worked for me was Super Iron Out from Lowes or Home Depot. Good luck with it Dave. If they have been there for awhile they can be a real PITA

    David,

Call me! Mallard Systems did one of these in a whole neighborhood that ended up being $250,000.00.

Doug, ended up trying a strong mix of oxalic acid and it did nothing. Tried Rust-Aid from Home Depot (Iron Out wasn't available) and it did nothing. Ended up walking away as I didn't want to experiment with the stronger acids and risk further damage to their concrete. I have since bought some Super Iron Out and will try it if I ever see this again.

Its much like compounding the paint job on a car. A little of the old paint needs to go to bring out the new. It is a tough job to get manginess stains out from fertilizer.

Hal, PM me the ratios you use for those bad rust stains, I would like to try them out.

I am not sure if it is Manganese or other mineral stains that make the concrete black but I have not found anything but Muriatic to get it out but I hate to use that stuff, especially strong.

F9 Concrete Rust Remover works well for fertilizer rust stains. It does not eat away at the cement, either like hydrochloric acid will.

As always, F9 needs to be applied by an F9 Authorized Professional Applicator. F9 has a list of them on their website under Find A Applicator.
