Oil change help!

I need advice on how to change my oil on my 20 hp Honda motor mounted to my skid. The drain plug is on the left side of the engine and is so low to the frame that you can't put anything underneath it to drain the oil. I will post a picture of it to show. Does anyone have an easy, and cleaner way to drain the oil?

Also, what is the best brand of oil to run?

Mark, looks like your going to have to unmount it and slide it out to drain it. Probably going to be a major PITA.
Once you do that get an oil drain hose kit. It attaches where your drain plug is and is around 6" long or so and has a plug on the end of it.
It would be long enough to stick outside of the frame and allow you to drain the oil into a drain pan.
If you bought the machine from a distributor it should have came with one on it already IMO.
Russ at Southside Equipment carries them.

Oil type? I prefer Quaker State or Castrol.

I would call Russ or Paul K to order the drain hose, it will be there in a day or a few and when you drain the oil, install the new drain hose so next time it will be a lot easier.

There are those drill pumps where you have the thin tube that will go into the dipstick tube, it will take a while but this way you don't get oil all over the skid or have to remove the engine but I would run the rig for a few minutes so the oil warms up, it will drain very, very slow on a cold day if the oil is not warmed up first.

Here's an old trick for a situation like that. Get some carb cleaner and plumber's putty. Spray the carb cleaner on the deck and wipe all the oil off. Take a couple of good sized chunks of the plumber's putty and roll them into snake shapes. Press the putty up against the engine block and make a channel off the side of the deck...

Oil=======drain pan

And call me for a Drainzit oil change tube to replace the plug.

Are u guys kidding me? Just suck it out thru the dipstick with a pump. They sell them real cheap u can use a drill type suction pump or by one that creates a vacuum like I have.
http://www.pelaproducts.com/ I use this to suck out the oil from my Outboard Boat engines as well.

That is a cool pump to remove oil Nick, I have not seen one like that before, where do you buy them?

I saw their video and sent a request to see if they sell them near me.

Nick, will that work with the pressure washing pumps also? I don't know if there are obstructions inside the pump or if the suction tube will make it to the bottom of the pump to get all the oil out or not.

Thanks.

I have been using the Pela pump for years now, it works great. the tube is real small and it goes right into the dipstick hole. I pump mine up about 10 pumps and it sucks it dry, then you can just dump the oil into another container and properly dispose of it. I use it on the pumps as well just put it into the fill hole and suck it out, no mess no fuss. I would do all three engines & pumps in 30 min or less, great product.

That sounds like a pretty neat pump!! I'm gonna have to give that a try!

I had a 250ml oil extractor like that. It came with a lathe I inherited from a friend. It was a metal pump and reservoir with a sight glass. The pump turned 1/4 turn and became an applicator so you could grease the gears then rotate the pump handle and recover excess that dripped down into the base of the gear box.
Any chance of getting one with a high capacity that isn't plastic?

Our engines have the drain hoses. They aren't long enough to reach off the trailer and they are in awkward spots, so we slip a 2 or so foot long piece of 1" tubing over them and drain through that.

We run quaker state 10w30

I stopped changing oil in pumps. I also stopped changing oil small engines to once a week, oil and air filter every month. Nothing special as far as oil.

Trucks every 3000

Ford transmission when I rebuild them. C6 Trany don't do anything but ad fluid. I don't care what the owners Manuel says.

Chevy every 60 in Trany or you will rebuild.

Talking about changing I have a little one that needs oil changed. 👀

as far as the oil I use Mobile Synthetic 10w30

We change the oil and filter once a month every month no matter the hours.

That's the only way to go Mobil 1.
I change mine every 50 hours of use.

1 1/4 quarts at 8 bucks that's 416 a year if mobile ones that cheap. I just can't justify that cost versus a new motor or even a rebuild for 650.

Trust me I want to keep equipment up, they just don't build anything to last no matter what you do.

Anyone know what stores sell the Pella pump?

I have looked online but would like to buy locally if possible but not sure what stores carry them, I need to change some oil in engines and pumps so I would like to try it out this weekend if I can find it locally.

I'm buying a pella if I can find one. There's always a synthetic 5-quart at walmart for around $20. I think 100 - 200 hrs is fine with synthetic. Always add a little lucas also.
