Tony,
Hope all is well. I agree with Ron.
We missed a Picnic one year - early on. Came back stronger than ever.
It had to be done, so I just went ahead and announced it when the decision was made and braced for a reaction.
A couple of guys gave me some grief - turns out most people were supportive.
(Or they barely noticed - any given event, 99.9% of the people aren't coming anyway.)
