Burner Problems

Burner started blowing white smoke about a week ago. I figured it was time for a new racor filter. I replaced the filter but could not get the fuel pump (suntec) to spray fuel out of the bleeder. Took off entire filter and hooked fuel line from tank directly into fuel pump.

Worked great for about a week. Started blowing white smoke again this weekend. Voltmeter is showing generator is putting out 120 volts under load (trigger pulled).

I am thinking fuel pump going bad, I dont have a pressure guage to test but fuel pump is about 6 years old.

The only other thing I can think of is generator belt is loose. I put on a new generator about 6 months ago and belt has stretched.

Machine is in box truck so I have to pull it out to tighten belt.

Just curious on thoughts.

I would first tighten the belt and see if that helps, As soon as you can I would buy a fuel gauge and put on the pump its not hard install and you can tell if the pump is running the correct psi. Make sure that your fuel filter is not clogged or has water in it as this will cause some smoke. Have you messed with the air band? There is also a filter inside the fuel pump if your main filter is clogged it might be aswell, becareful taking the cover off because you might damage the gasket. Your nozzles might be getting clogged making a bad spray pattern putting the flame out and then igniting causing smoke. Drop the door on your ignitior and wipe off the parts of any debris that might be on the springs and bolts to ensure its getting plenty of spark. If all this does not work than buy a new fuel pump and see if that helps.

If you keep having trouble I would give Russ Johnson a Call! and buy his DVD on repairs its well worth the money to save you on your down time.

If you think the belt is loose ...unplug from generator ...plug into extension cord ...that will help narrow it down ...

Intermittant ignition is usually caused by dirty, out of adjustment electrodes, or improper air-mixture.
Airbands go out of adjustment, (a reminder "bouncing down the highway" has its affect on the equipment.)
and bad connections on 12 volt sysyetms allow fuel build-up to temporarily "choke" the air mixture as well.
every diesel fired heater needs an electrode cleaning and air adjustment anually, for the BEST of reliability.
If you are doing jobs in varying altitude.. you may need to adjust air at every 1000 ft of elevation change.
If you don't know how to do electrode adjustments, learn now.

about fuel pressure guages on fuel pumps..
if you have one, troubleshootng is VERY easy..
if you Don't have one.. you are handicapped, in fronmt of your best customer, on a difficult day,
..for saving $15.
