Fat/Grease looking substance in gas tank?

On one of my units I noticed a white/tan looking substance in the gas tank. Almost looks like the fat/grease that is left after grilling stuff on a George Foreman. I don't really know how else to describe it. Pictures to come tomorrow if I can get a decent picture of it.

My question is, what is it? and what do I do about it?

If there's gas in the tank and this stuff is floating in/on it, drain and flush out the tank. If the tank is dry and this stuff is sitting on the bottom of the tank, flush out the tank.

the stuff seems to be caked/dried around the edges of the tank

It's caused by the ethanol in the fuel.....You should be adding a stabilizer to the fuel. Ethanol gas will rust out a steel tank in I have it happen to the gas tank on my roof pump.

I had the same thing on a brand new unit. And a plastic tank. I assumed it was wax.

Ok so a stabilizer it is. The tank is brand new on my hot water skid. Plastic tank. Thanks for the input guys, going to flush the tank and use a stabilizer from now on.

Diesel has bio added it doesn't cause build up. I run diesel kleen through mine a couple of times a year it helps burn out the soot build up and clean the nozzles

Seafoam is a good cleaner/additive that can be used in gasoline and diesel and can also be added to the engine oil.. I recommend it in forced fan heaters too.
