Heavy Moss Roofs

Hey everyone.

Been lurking the forums for a long time now and have a question. I am looking to get into roof cleaning and am wondering about roofs with lots of moss on them, like the picture below for example. Do you use your regular mix and apply more, beef it up, or actually manually remove the moss? Lots of asphalt shingle roofs here that are this bad or worse.

Thanks!

Wow! I hate to say it but, if you have people in your area with roofs that bad they probably don't care or they need to be educated as to the fact that this could have been prevented. More than likely roofs invested that badly have already been damaged by the root systems of all that moss. Don't try to remove it by hand. You will only damage the roof more. A very strong roof cleaning solution should be applied first to kill off all of that moss. These situations take multiple coats of mix and you may have to go back and respray several times on different occations. Once the moss is completely dead the ruminants should decay and fall off with a few good rain storms.

It will not be a one time trip to complete the job nor will it suddenly clean up.

Seriously, I agree with Larry and others have said here. Strong mix, multiple applications over multiple trips, plenty of rain and wind needed. Set customer expectations. Also, what type of plant situation is there under the roof?

Those are wood shakes.

I just pulled this picture off of google to give an example of how bad the roofs are here, but good eye.

I agree, they do clearly need to be educated. I asked about removing it by hand because the only roof cleaners in my area advertise that they get on the roof with hand tools and pop the moss off that way.

Thanks for all the information everyone. About how long would you leave it sit between applications?

Never mechanically remove moss and lichen. Go to http://softwashsystems.activeboard.com/ and search the topic. There is allot of great info on roof cleaning there. Best site on the web BAR NONE! No drama and no mis directs to cripple competition. Also we have a great module on Roof Spraying Techniques that addresses moss and lichen at, http://softwashsystems.activeboard.com/ as well as pro staff members all over the country dealing with moss at differing levels.

Thanks,

AC
