Is Higher GPM Better?

Q: I recently aquired a truck washing account. I have been thinking about get*ting a high-volume unit [10 gpm] to wash with so I could finish faster. What do you think?

A: Although you may save some time while washing, you will definitely spend more time and money trying to reclaim such a large volume of water. I reco...mmend that you stay with a 5-gpm machine or less. It will be much cheaper in the long run.

I see pro & Cons on both sides.

If your mobile you have issues of water availiability. More water reclaim issues, you might need larger vacs. You will need more energy to run a larger unit would means more costs. would the labor savings be worth it?

Provided you meet the Reclaim, the energy , water and other issues if its faster and the cost weigh out then it might be worth it.

Well, just how much faster? If you sprayed twice as fast with twice the water, you'd use the same amount. Time is money so it may be worth it depending on how much it takes off the whole job.

definately no advantage for trucks cause your working so hard allready, then to have to walk or run faster would just add to the kill. I would like to get one of those maximas and a tsf some day for my flat work.

I agree with the more volume for flat work. As for truck washing, if you produce more water in a shorter period of time you will get far less evaporation.

I don't think a guy can move fast enough with 10 gpm and still use the same amount of water per unit. But it would also vary depending on the truck wash method used.

I have a 11gpm 4500 psi(Set at 3500) hot water powerwasher and its by far our fastest machine when doing flatwork. The water tank on that trailer is aprox 550 gallons and that machine needs all of it when operating...Time is money.

I dont see it being any faster. I have washed tons of trucks with a 5 gpm. then made the upgrade to 8gpm and Didnt see much diference. the only time i saw a diference was when the 8gpm got split into 2 guns. We brush all our trucks though. 2 guys on guns 2 guys on brush duty, all rotating in 30 min intervals. this way the wash water would be on 2 seperate sides of the jobsite and would evaporate more. 10 gpm would be faster.

5 to 6 is good.. I would think anything more and you would run out of water too fast. We can do 30 units on a 500 gallon tank of water with 2 machines running 4.5 to 5.5. A tank lasts us about 45 minutes. I wouldnt be able to go much faster with more gpm and your moving so fast I would think it would wear you out.
