Lift Question

Weve got a large tile roof to be cleaned from a lift. The lift will be sitting in an alphalt parking lot (asphalt isnt new.. isnt ancient)

What is the heaviest lift that you have used in this situation?

The rental company told me that we would be fine with the 20k 60 foot knuckle boom lift, but I would really like to have the reach of the 80 footer. Which weighs 38k....

Ive also considered ripping 3/4" sheets of plywood in half to drive on..

I would not rip the plywood in half as the larger area helps to prevent ruts.

The plywood will be making cracking and creaking sounds but it will be ok.

The Big Bucket Truck weighs 26,820 pounds and we used 3/4" plywood over grassy areas before and no serious ruts were left.

I have used the 3/4" plywood on the 60' and 80' lifts before on grass and where the grass was especially soft we put 2 sheets down under each wheel.

I think that as long as you have plywood under each wheel you will be ok but don't rip the sheets.

You will need at least 6 sheets of plywood to be under the lift at all times but if you have to drive and the asphalt is weak, you will need to leap-frog the plywood and I would have at least 10-12 sheets of plywood there. The length of a lot of 60' and 80' lifts will need about 6 sheets, 3 under each side to cover the front and back wheels with 1 in-between the wheels as you are moving if you understand what I am saying.

If you have any questions, give me a call.

The good thing is that you can re-use the plywood over and over and over, just keep a tarp over it and keep it laying down flat like on top of a couple of pallets with something on top of it to help keep it from warping upward. We had a lot of rains with the jobs this year but once the plywood is stored flat it will be ok.

What really matters is how good the asphalt is packed.

If it is packed good then it will handle a 125' manlift, I have used those out on asphalt before and no problems and a couple times we still had to put down some 1" plywood as a few areas were kind of weak asphalt but most of the time there will not be an issue.

If there is a bad spot that you have to be on, have a helper go to the HD or Lowe's and grab some sheets of plywood so you are covered.
