Mystery engine trouble

Engine running fine. Can go hours or even days.

Engine starts to bog and sounds rough like misfiring.

Turn off and restart, engine runs ok again but not for long. Can do this repeatedly.

While engine was bogging out, I pulled the boot off of one plug and it instantly smoothed out??

Changed plugs and they look normal. Changed the magneto on that side.

I think it might only happen when the heat is on. The ignitor recently burnt out and was replaced, engine trouble before and after.

Thanks for any ideas

Oops - it is a 28 hp kohler aegis, the water cooled model. Direct magneto ignition no electronics or advance.

EFI version requires full voltage from battery..
check charging system.
..that is another reason ignitors fail too !

Yes Jerry. I had a similar problem, turns out it was a very loose black wire terminal on the 12v battery, would vibrate out and cause an electrical short and bog the engine down.

Bob thats what I was thinking, the control box vibrates a lot. I am going to redo the wiring and hope that does it. It sure seems electrical but intermittent stuff sure is hard to pin down.

I was talking about the terminal connectors ring clamps on the battery posts itself. Make sure they are tight.
