question about pump.

I have a general pump that has 4 ports. There is just plugs in the two empty ports. I looked up the specs on the pump and it says the 3/8 port on top is where you can install a thermal protector. They even give the part number. This doesn't sound right to me. Isn't the top 3/8" port the outlet port for the high pressure hose? On most pumps I have seen the thermal protector valve is on the bottom 1/2" inlet. I am trying to salvage my spare pump but I don't want it to explode in my face. I still haven't gotten the gearbox off the shaft of my extra engine yet....I'm having a rough month!

The thermal valve goes on the inlet or in the bypass circuit.
