To strip, or just clean...

Ok, so my friend wants me to clean his deck again.

Last time after cleaning he used an oil based stain. Now, he wants to use a water or latex based stain because his neighbor did.

Should I just clean with precarb and brighten, and let him do his thing? Or would it be vital to strip because of the change in type of stain being used?

Thanks much for any help!

Talk him into staying with oil based. In my opinion, it's the way to go. I would imagine it would be best for any type of stain to start with a clean slate.
One of the pros will shed some light for you.

Don't get involved , it's too confusing , nobody knows what there doing in the deck world and it's getting worse . I pull my hair everyday with the same questions . The guy at the paint store said this , the builder said this, I red on the garden site this, and don't use a pressure cleaner !

Its time to to just wash concrete and take it easy ........

Thanks Jim an Hal.

-Jim I'd like to just walk away but it's for a friend and he won't let me :p

clean it strip it stain it with his water base.......When it does not hold up say.......I Told You So

Clean it for him and walk away. If you apply what he buys and it's not compatible with the last product used it will be "YOUR FAULT !!!!!"
