When does spot free stop being spot free?

I think I already know the answer. First my water is about 350-400 tds. I have looked everywhere for di water but with such high tds it doent seem worth it $$$. I have been looking into a ro machine, guy says he can get it down to about 10 or under, but with a different membrane I'll get alot more flow but tds will be around 35-60. So at what tds will water start leaving spots, think I read once around 10. Does anyone have a truck mount(portable) ro machine?

I couldn't tell you for sure, but I do know that it is a lot of money to spend to wash a truck.
Have you thought about additives to help in the spot rfee department or are the customers just that picky?

In my area, the water is so hard that additives don't help. It is RO, or DI or nothing, if you are washing trucks. Around here, 300 TDS is unusually soft water. We are closer to 800 on a day to day basis. It does present some unique challenges.
As for portable systems, I would look at a DI rental from Culligan, or another pure water place. It will have a small footprint on your truck or trailer, and is pressure fed from a hose, so you don't need an additional generator. For contract cleaners, it can be pricey. A lot of the water companies don't like renting to contract cleaners, because as a group, we have a terrible reputation for not paying our bills.

I agree with Scott check with culligan or another local supplier. I used to rent my tanks when I did car lots and it was much easier. Later I had an RO system as well and it just wasn't worth the hassle and did not produce the water fast enough for me. Eventually I moved to soft water and with the right detergents I am basically spot free. If I were to do car lots again I would rent the DI tanks though for that.(they are just too picky)

We had spots at 80. We had a two stage light, first at 40 second at 60. We would change at 60.
I don't think anything ever worked as well as DI tanks (from culligan). Our competition had pissed of the culligan man, but we built a great relationship with them! Ours stopped filling in house, and around that time car lots really lost their profitability.

I thought you would start seeing spots at about 10 or 20tds?

You'll see spots on windows starting around 10ppm. It's important to note tho, that dissolved solids all leave spots starting at different concentrations. So somebody with water from one source may have a TDS of 50 without seeing spots while somebody on another part of town or across the country could see spots with a TDS of 8. It all depends on what the dissolved solid actually is. As a general rule of thumb, below 10 is what your shooting for.

Thanks for explaining that Micah.

We have hard water down here and always have issues with water spots but when I was using my water softener it seemed like they were not as bad but still there.

I don't have any accounts where I would need the DI tank but would get one if they were that picky and wanted to pay for that level of service.
