GRAND ISLE, La. – An offshore oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday, west of the site of the April blast that caused the massive oil spill.

A commercial helicopter company reported the blast around 9:30 a.m. CDT Thursday, Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Ranel said. Seven helicopters, two airplanes and four boats were en route to the site, about 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay along the central Louisiana coast.

The Coast Guard said initial reports indicated all 13 crew members from the rig were in the water. One was injured, but there were no deaths.
The platform owned by Mariner Energy is in about 2,500 feet of water, the Coast Guard said, and was not currently producing.

About 206 million gallons of oil from an undersea well spilled into the Gulf after BP's Deepwater Horizon rig exploded April 20, killing 11 workers.

The really sad part about the explosion of the one in April is that all you hear about is the cost of clean up and what it's doing to our enviroment neither is as high a price that the families of the 11 have paid. wives lost husbands children lost fathers and parents lost children. it is sad when we focus more on financial cost then peoples lives. But,thats our media.

I heard a lot about the the men that died

I am glad the media actually stayed on it. I bet if there wasn't much media BP wouldnt have done as much as they did, I bet they wouldnt have put the 20 billion in an account to help cover the thousands of people that were and will be effected for years

I bet without the media they would be saying its a small leak. The media kept BP's and the Govs feet to the fire I think on this one

The media can be pains, but I trust them a lot more than BP & the Gov

They just said that oil was leaking from the site and was already spread as far as one mile from the explosion site.

It was just a platform rig not a drilling rig. No oil spill...

I have to agree with you on not trusting the Gov. and BP and they may have helped push it along but the media can't be trusted either. to trust what the media says is kinda like believing pro wrestling is real. the media overseas in combat zones are as much a threat as the ones we are fighting. however, if they got that much money deposited maybe at last they were usefull
