Tampa RT Skid For Sale

Well it looks like some of you think I’m one SOB. Evidently, I have slapped everyone in the face with my decision to sell the skid I won at the Tampa R/T. Given the fact you don’t know me and don’t know my financial situation the sanctimonious comments from some of you are disappointing.

I didn’t go to the Tampa R/T with the goal of winning the grand prize. It turned out I was very lucky. Now, since I have decided to sell the unit I have to put up with comments that make me out to be an ungrateful monster.

I won the skid on July 31th and listed it for sale on Craig’s List on Aug. 27th. During that 4 week period I thought long and hard about how I could incorporate the skid into my business. I won’t go into the process and my reasoning but I came to the decision that selling the unit was in my best interest and my families. Therefore, I would continue to focus on roof cleaning and sell the skid to provide much needed cash for other areas in my business and family.

That decision was mine and mine alone. One poster bellowed “THAT SUCKS, Shame on him.” Well Owen if you think I should be ashamed of thinking of my family and business before I think of your warped sense of right and wrong then you and I will just have to disagree.

Also for everyone who expressed that there are too many other contractors that deserved a break more than me, I say you are looking at it the wrong way. Someone can still get a break by taking advantage of a price much lower than they can get from a distributor. They can share in my good luck.

Winning the skid did not come with a set of conditions, especially one that said you MUST NOT SELL the skid. Also, I was not told that there are unwritten rules that must be followed. Some have expressed that only contractors who use hot water skids should be allowed to enter the prize give-away. That sounds like something that might come from our current government. You know the government that will require our companies to file 1099’s for every vendor we spend at least $600 with. Now I understand how those guys got elected.

I rarely come to PWI since I mainly blog at RCIA and probably would not have known about this thread if I had not been told by someone who called about the skid. After reading the comments I felt compelled to respond. I believe in freedom and respect everyone’s freedom of speech. I would only hope that before you make comments about a person’s character or actions that you would be familiar with the person and his or her situation.

Have a nice day.

Charles

Charles, I guess the reason you're getting so much grief is because there are lots of guys who could have turned that $5k machine into tens of thousands of dollars by utilizing it in their current operation.

Imagine if you entered a contest to help pay off your mortgage, but you owned your home. Meanwhile others traveled long distances hoping for a chance to get bailed out of of a home on which they now owe twice its worth. You win. They all go home and then you try to sell what THEY came there in need of back to them for money they didn't have in the first place.

That's where the anger is coming from.

But you are absolutely right. You have every right to do whatever you want with that skid. There were no conditions and I don't foresee that there will ever be any conditions on winning. (As there shouldn't be) I don't think anyone's judging your character, maybe questioning your judgment.

However, your comment about "someone else" getting a break by not paying distributor pricing would have a lot more teeth if you had at least offered it back to the community that gave it to you (PWI, RCIA, ETC) and REALLY offered it at a price that could actually HELP a struggling contractor.

$5000 new skids are a dime a dozen. If you had not put it on craigslist but rather put it on the industry boards for $2500-$3k you would have sold it quickly and had $3k in your pocket for nothing more than being lucky and you would have actually HELPED a struggling contractor.

Now do you see why posting it on Craigslist for $5k (even though that is a fair price under normal circumstances) looks like a slap in the face?

Charles was there to network and learn, the entries were all put in the same bin. My name was pulled for a laptop, and Charles was pulled for the skid....as for Charles selling the unit....I feel it's his, he can do what he wishes.
I dont think he was there to win the skid unit, but he did. I asked him as we loaded it, what was he going to use it for, and he said he would incorporate it into his company.
He changed his mind, like we all do.

Ron M called me one night and we were talking, and he had mentioned that if I were to win it, I could sell it that day if I wanted. He stated there are guys who want it and they are willing to pay for it there on the spot. So I guess if it's ok with him, it should be ok with Charles.

Try to understand Charles as well guys..he is running a buisness too

Hey Charles had every right to sell it but we all have the right to say what we think about that. Its non of our business as to why he sold it so thats not in question because its obvious he had his reasons. But that aside its unfortunate a guy couldn't win that machine that really needed it. Now thats a good story and probably the story that the Hydrotek dist. would have loved to have to maybe even market it. But since thats not the case its a bummer,,,but good luck to you Charles for winning it and its yours to do what you want.

Charles it is yours and you can do as you please. Since you are working on roofs and not in the business end where a hot water machine is needed I see your point. You would have to spend additional money to set up and take away from your roof cleaning to go out to marketing for jobs to use it with. By the fact you waited a month tells me you thought it over and decided it your best course of action. I wish you success in selling and expanding your roofing cleaning as well.
