Air balance tests

Hey guys, lately I've been getting a lot of calls to check cfm's. I have just been referring them to my a/c buddies, but now I'm thinking that I'm turning away some money and a chance to bid on a hood. How hard is it to check? Do I need to be a rocket scientist or can I get by with my 80 IQ?

Wouldn't you need to be licensed in that type of inspection? I worked for an engineering firm in Florida that did balancing (although not Kitchen Exhaust) and everything had to go through for a P.E. approval. At the firm I am at now we have P.E.'s for HVAC I asked but know one knows anything about Kitchen Exhaust requirements. ( These are Pharmaceutical dudes)

If I am not mistaken, you need a special license in California to do those calculations and recommendations. In these parts we have a company that only does the testing.

David is right, but, I know if it is an existing system you can confirm that the system is performing as it was designed. Now to change it . yeah I would think you would have to go to a engineer who can sign off on it and the fire marshall to aprove it as well here in VA

The problem is that you open yourself up to another level of insurance liability and the beat goes on.
