Am I the only parent worried about how much money kids spend on CS2 skins?

Guys, I need some advice because I'm kind of stuck. My son is always playing KS2, and he recently asked me for money to buy some keys for cases. I started looking into what they are and got a little freaked out: you buy a key for a couple of dollars, and you end up with some cheap junk, even though he’s dreaming of a skin worth a thousand bucks. It’s pure roulette for teenagers!

I’ve also heard that lawsuits have even started over these loot boxes, since it’s supposedly illegal gambling. So here I am, wondering if there’s any way to block these purchases on Steam so he doesn’t blow his allowance? And in general, is there any movement in the world right now against these mechanics, or will developers just keep cashing in on this?

I understand your concern; many parents are facing this issue right now. You can block purchases using parental controls within Steam itself, where you can set a PIN code for any transactions. As for the lawsuits—you’re right, it’s a hot topic right now. For example, U.S. states are already putting pressure on Valve; this article https://bleedingfool.com/gaming/cou...grounds-for-a-new-york-lawsuit-against-valve/ breaks down in detail how prosecutors are equating these cases with gambling due to the lack of age verification. In many places, developers are being forced to disclose drop rates or are banning loot boxes altogether. If I were you, I’d just explain the math behind these cases to your son, because the odds of coming out ahead are practically nonexistent. How long has he been into this, anyway?
