Are Kohl's Calls Scams?

Maybe I'm being paranoid (as I'm sure all my ex-wives would attest) but in the last 2 years we've gotten about 7 calls all from different organizations asking if we would bid on doing the sidewalks in front of Kohl's stores. Its always Kohl's, and its always a new organization looking for a 3rd party to do the work.

Is it a scam? Is Kohl's constantly fielding out new work? Any thoughts?

Thanks Marc

Kohls is new to the retail game. Not new in the sense they have not been around but have grown in the past years.

I'm suspect they dont have the operation of handling non-esential service issues.

Target, walmart and Kmart all operate different. Kohls is trying to model targets from what i can see.

Its real and they keep changing for what ever reasons. I still work for the original company they hired out of phx area.

I will always send my bid to the new companys handling it. Have not ever gotten a call back and never followed up very well.

The stores here get done irregular.

We've been called by them too, but never worked for them. They didn't like our prices, we didn't like the idea of not being profitable. 'Nuff said 'bout that.

All the big chain stores are all using national management companies now. They get $xxxx money to do all the maint of their stores for the year including landscaping, plowing, sweeping..etc. They make their money subcontracting out to local vendors. In some markets they make big money where there is a ton of competition in others not so much.

Target for example uses U.S. Maint now, I believe, but they went through several different management companies over the past few years because each either says they can do it for less or don't get it done at all and have to be fired. The sad thing is as soon as they fail someone else is their to take their place and do it for less.

In some cases you can get decent money from them and a fair amount of work it just takes some time to get paid so work that in your price. You can also counter offer them what they say they will pay and if it is reasonable they will usually take it if they need the job done or are having problems finding a contractor.

It's the new corporate mentality... short term gain for looking good to the boss. "look how much money I saved the company" nevermind the fact in 5 years they will spend 10 times as much getting the place fixed up or restored to how it should be.

Hey Scott,

I don't know anything about the pricing in your area. If you want to work for 4-6 cents a square foot go for it. I'm not calling anyone a low baller and I not going to take time to justify everything I say after this statement either.

Personally with rising gas prices and all I think the current pricing for the entire industry should be going way up. 10 cents a square foot doesn't leave much profit after overhead these days. The economy and weather patterns are taking out PW contractors left and right and making room for even lower priced guys every month. Then after a few months they get taken out when they can't pay their bills.
