berry stains on concrete

i have a nice sized job to do around a pool it looks like a bunch of berry stains all over the concrete, they are black in color now, i have a 3000 psi hot water machine it doesent seem to be taking them off they probally been there for a while, what kind of chemicals should i try?? thanks

We are definitely neighbors.about 15 minutes apart. I'm not trying to belittle but are you sure they are berries? At this time of year there are many types of oaks in this area that will leave those stains from the acorns , nuts or what have you. The key is in telling the customer that they need to remove that tree or be proactive when they drop, the same for a berry tree. This happened to me about 5 years ago and it dumbfounded me. I got a tree specialist and made test spots with the different acorns and found that certain types leave stains that look like berry stains.Either way I would also "start" with oxalic acid also.
 
I encounter these "natural" stains on a regular basis and have always been able to remove them completely with bleach. I usually use a 1:10 mixture (downstreaming is fine and fast), but occaisionally I have used it straight. Spray it on and let it dwell for a while, then reapply until gone.

I don't know if the oxalic acid would work, but then the entire area would need to be treated so that it will blend-in. (Since the acid will brighten the concrete.) Since this is around a pool, using bleach should not be a problem.

I ALSO WOULD TEND TO BELIEVE THAT THESE STAINS MIGHT BE FROM ACORNS OR SOMETHING OF THAT SORT. I ENCOUNTERED THE SAME BLACK LOOKING STAINS WHICH WERE FROM ACORNS. I JUST USED MY NORMAL DOWNSTREAM CHLORINE (10%) & USED THE SURFACE CLEANER. I THEN SPRAYED STRAIGHT 10% (LOW PRESSURE) CHLORINE ON IT. IT DID A GREAT JOB REMOVING THE STAINS.
 
I agree with John, I use bleach diluted 1 gallon bleach to 4 gallons water then downstream and soak the entire area. The stains will dissappear as the solution works. It may take 2 applications and washing the concrete may be necessary to remove dirt and mold but the stains will go away with bleach.

Looks like we’re practically neighbors—only about 15 minutes apart. I don’t mean to question you, but are you certain those stains are from berries? This time of year, several types of oak trees in our area can leave similar marks from acorns, nuts, or other debris.





The key is educating the customer: whether it’s a berry-producing tree or an oak, they either need to remove the tree or be proactive when it starts dropping. I actually dealt with the same issue about five years ago and it completely stumped me. I brought in a tree specialist and did some test spots with different acorns—we discovered that some types can leave stains almost identical to berry stains.





Either way, I’d recommend starting with oxalic acid as your first approach.
