Riding what I can afford. But, yes I'm still riding! Never had a bit of trouble with my metric either. The prices for the HD are outrageous and my money tree doesn't bloom that much. Maybe one day when I hit the lottery. My shadow does just fine.

nothin wrong wit da "burners" I got an 800 intruder just a small lil dude but it will haul butt.....gOt some street pipes on 'er and let me tell ya it sounds great ..... everybody thinks it's a hog...... o-well let 'em think i say..........waite till they get a load of the ole FATBOY..........

exactly, let them think what they want. I got a set of Cobra drag pipes and rejetted the carb with a Dyno Jet kit. My back tire is awesome. bigger than what goes on the HD full dressers. My scooter will scoot. Around here, I have to have bug sheild. Also got $$ in hondo "chrome". Will continue to customize, the next project is a bigger gas tank and Mustang seat, the little lady needs a little more comfort than the stock seat. 20,000 miles later and I am still happy with what I have. But still dream of the Heritage Springer. Around here they are asking 23K. Unreal. And they get it too.

any new harley

is over 75% jap made anyways. You dont see any advertisment that says anything about made in the USA. Screaming eagle parts all crap from japan-
all leather overseas-all electrics overseas-the front forks have been made overseas for 40 years[SHOWA]-CHROME is all overseas[lower EPA rules] motor blocks and frames are about the only things still made here.
ive got a 72 flh restored 75 fl slight chop
and a 68 hardtail 108 inc motor 4 spd tranny
foot clutch jockey shift 12 inc over springer
no front brake duel plug heads duel coil karata magneto[4 wire] no battery 3 inc open belt drive
I call it the MURDER CYCLE IT WEIGHS LESS THEN I DO AND GOES ABOUT 130 MPH
its for sale if anyones interested in killing themselves also has a S/S carb with a thunder jet installed by zippers. Have extra frame to make it into a fat tire bike if wanted. $15,000 or best offer. oh wrong site. sorry

Squirt,

HD only claims to be the last American motorcyle company, they have not been 100% American built for years yet to a die hard HD rider you will not win that argument.

I rode Yamaha Venture Royale's (5) total 83 to 90, wife just felt it was time to trade for an RV.

I would rather be riding and she knows I have been looking, now to get my Doctor to modify my restrictions and bingo I will be back in the saddle again. ( I seriouly doubt the good Doc will allow it)

Started riding at 14 on a Triump tiger cub. Anyone here old enough to remember those?

yel I remember the pussycat.

I started out on a honda 50,when I got it home I started taking things off it and turning screws on carb.Man you talk about tearing up some gravel and dirt roads I did, even jump ditches, fly over wittle hills,so much dust you couldn't see which way ya came from after making a few do'nuts in the middle of the road.My next one was a GT 550 chopper sorta souped up,billy goat handle bars, ext.'d forks, wow what a ride. The last one is 1300cc 6 pluger 85 model vo'ger dress bike,it runs so quit you can hear a pin drop, nice air'ride though the night air.

Jon,

I remember. I started on a Suzuki 50 in the early 70's. Took out the baffle and did this and that and hit the dirt track.

Well worth a look at the new American made bike company. Victory. Their new bagger is well worth the money, just ask Arlen Ness, he bought into the line.

Reed,

Is that the one that started making the Indian motorcycle again?

Do you know the web site for them?

Now Bigboy I know old enough to remember way back in the 50s but you man don't look that old, guess hiding behind that beard does the job!

Jon,

Here is the link. www.victory-usa.com You can even "build" your victory at this site. Add ons.

Victory is made by Polaris. Indian is Indian thru and thru. Their own company.

The Victory dealerships will let you test drive on. The one close to me took one off the show room floor, gassed it up, and let me take it out for 15 miles. Let's see HD do that!

Reedster Reedster Reedster,,,,,,,,,,,,, Do I detect a lil HD post syndrom?
I know the hogs have a certain sound to 'em that no can compare..... but really what it comes down to is value.... you will get just as much for your hog as you paid for it some caces more... they hold their value.... I reakon that is about it for comparision.

I put $ down on my fatboy and have 30 days to change my mind for a complete $ back........... Now you are making me change my mind..........................

hey DAN

Thats about $18,000 for a bike that looks like everyone elses now by the time you get done making it yours you better plan on a min of another $5000 pipes, carb, polish the lower legs, new seat, chrome everything thats black, change those big nasty blinkers, buy 10 lbs of polish, and a cover for it,a battery tender, new leather jacket,chaps,4-$40 tee-shirts,2 decals for your truck, new helmet[you need a coooool one],a pair of KD sunglasses, one pair of clear ones for night riding, tool roll with tools[leather], new boots,
4 helmet stickers, one pair of OFFICIAL HD leather gloves [MADE IN PAKASTAIN], OR
GET A CUSTOM MADE BIKE WITH ALL THE RIGHT STUFF ON IT FROM THE GET GO. NOT A NEVER ENDING PILE OF JAP PARTS PUT TOGETHER TO BE TAKEN APART.
On another not you should take a good look at yamaha's new WARRIOR DUEL PLUG HEADS 102 INC MOTOR [BIGGEST MOTOR ON ANY PRODUCTION MOTORCYCLE]
VICTORYS suck they have changed motors 3 times now and there tranny's suck real bad
we are down to 2 dealers left here in NJ they cant give them away. Ness was GIVEN stock to lend his name and make parts the only reason he did it was that VICTORY is the most american made production bike.
harley has 2 motor also the A and the B THE b's ARE ON SOFTAILS the B stands for balanced
they also have changed the internals on there fathead motors 3 times. That new water cooled junk is another thing to stay away from.
i love my old bikes and spend a lot of time on them but im selling one of them to get that WARRIOR $12,000

I have been reading everything here and had to chuckle a bit. Everyone has a good point but to put a Honda in the same Class as a HD is just funny to me. HD is the king of the road Jap made or not. Dan I must say congrats on a fine pick.

Ok guys n gals,

If you truly want to get down to the nuts and bolts of bikes, like cars they have wheels and a motor and they take you from point A to point B.

Now it really matters little what brand gets you there as long as you arrive in one piece, right?

Sure we all have or preferrences as to brands, color etc. but main point is getting there.

Want to truly make this interesting then think how the Amish get around? Still use the horse and buggy just fine and they have no worry about uninsured drivers, unlicensed drivers, drunks and what not other then us speeding though their townships.

Squirt

A custom bike would be nice, esp if I had 45,000 to spend on one with "all" the right stuff on it. But seriously, those who choose a custom, my hats off to you. I can't afford one, glad they can.

On the HD, I don't admonish the ride of a HD. I have a small issue with dealers that jack the price 6K and get it. The demand exceeds the supply or there wouldn't be such a price hike. When is HD going to stop putting MSRP on their listings and put the real price, MSRP + 4-6K more. That is my issue. I would love to have my Heritage springer. To me nothing depicts the motorcycle as does a Heritage springer.

Alot of the custom dealerships went tits up in the past years, Exel-Henderson, TITAN, and a few others I have forgotten in my old age. As far as the service on the Victory, yes they had tranny problems square when they should have had round, like all others, from the start. The reviews of the new Victory in HotBike and Cruizer mags have said that Victory is on track now. These guys make a living riding bikes and reporting. When I was at Sturgis I tried to test ride as many bikes as possible. I thoroughly enjoyed the FATBOY FI. What a smooth feeling. The vibration at 80MPH was no different than the vibration felt at idle. I was to say the least very impressed. The softails should be rubber mounted, but the counterbalanced B's make the statement of why rubber mount. A note on the V-Rod. Don't give me one. I'd kill myself with that kind of performance. It got mixed reviews in the mags. Pricing is ok on it though. I was shocked HD didn't jack that up into the heavens also.

One thing I did get out of Sturgis, it didn't matter what you ride. You were part of an experience, a party, a brotherhood. Crotch rocket, metric or HD or what ever. You were a part of it and welcomed.

I will continue to ride and ride what I can afford and wish others the very best in what they ride. I will also continue to strive for the "bike", The Heritage Springer.

Ride safe.
Reed
