Is one method better than another for pricing cleaning and staining a fence(square foot vs linear foot} When pricing what do you do when you incounter fences like picket( spaces between boards} and shadow fences{ off center back to back[4 sides to stain]. Any pricing infor would be helpful. Thanks

Hi Jeff,

I don't think that much outside wood is getting washed and sealed in this weather in New Jersey. While your sitting aound watching the icicles melt you should order a book called, "How Much Should I Charge" by Ellen Rohr. It's $20.00. Get it through amazon.com, barnes and noble.com or from 877-629-7647. Check barebonesbiz.com. It will answer all of your pricing questions for every job and show you why you should charge that price.

when it comes to fence

the price has everything to do with getting the job. Some fence is only $20 a section to buy. Some $120 a cection. Also the style of fence.
One problem a lot of washers have is "who owns the fence?" If it faces your customer but belongs to the heibour are you allowed to do anything to it?
NO YOUR NOT WITHOUT PERMISSION. The fence is on the owners property.
Second is what if the customer only wants THERE side done? Sealing only one side can be a real pain in the butt.
Then there is the mud. Use an old piece of vynal siding to lay at the bottom to keep mud from going everywhere. You will look like a paper mache doll when your done washing it. Wood fiber everywhere.
I think to strip/wash-brighten-seal you should get around $2 a lin ft per side. More if it's board on board.
Go to www.deckguide.com for more info. use the search.
