Flat work,,?????????????

Ron I would think that newbies feel that way, or to put it another way it looks easy so clean flat work, mess up, find out how hard it can be , leave zebra stripes, chip off a piece of stucco, forget to wipe the windows you got wet and more. Then say this is harder then I thought and either quit or cross over to fleet or gutters or some other form of pressure washing.

I started with flat work knowing that was what I wanted to do, that is pretty much all I do. Sure dumpster pads might include the walls but I consider that part of the job.

Just starting out, Never thought i would end up doing flat work now it is part of job...Started out with decks and house washes, But ended out with trying to do vent-a-hood which in turn will end up with flat work on the outside..To me it was all hard in the beginning, But the hardest was finding work and keeping busy...
Been in business for only one year +....

Hi Ron,

Yes we do flatwork, but it only represents about 2-1/2% of our total revenue.

Our revenue for the past 6 years breaks down as follows:

Fleets - 24%
Exhaust systems - 26%
Industrial - 30%
Commercial - 20% this includes flatwork

How about some of you other folks. What type of work do you receive your revenue from?

I dont know the actual number but i would guess 98% from Flat work..

My real question is about the fundamental of pw. does it all start from Flat work.. everyone does Flat work... I dont clean Hoods. i dont do fleets.

Not me,flatwork is like mowing the lawn with a push mower and I'm not crazy about pushing a push mower.I have the flat'surf cleaner and the exten'wands, only used the surf cleaner one time and the exten'wands 3 or 4 times,so if flatwork was the fundamental of this trade guess I still would be saleing cigs and tobacco.Maybe the fundamental would be what ever you thought at the time you buy the powerwasher wheather flat, houses, decks or fleets.Would the fundamental in fishing be the boat or the pole or the bait, guess maybe water huh.

My foundation is exhaust cleaning, I only got into flat work because my customer asked for it, otherwise I probably wouldn't do it at all, I would guess that 95% of my revenue is generated by exhaust cleaning.

dave what is the difference ?

Industrial - 30%
Commercial - 20% this includes flatwork

dave can you tell me the difference please between the two please, i know you are a fairly big set up (love your trucks:) ).

when i start out it will be with two men(me & a n other)so on my flyier, if i said commercial, would that mean shop fronts and ???

tyia.

Got out of fleet washing and detailing, and never wanted to ever do another car or truck again.

Percentage of Flat Work: 99.999999%

I think we have all done some odds and ends, but the staple of my business starting out and from then on was always flat work. I think it is a cakewalk now. My first job, I was ready to throw in the towel that night. Couldn't believe what I had gotten myself into. Now, wouldn't do it any other way.

I don't do retail. Strictly industrial and commercial.
